New Foundland Moose and Caribou rifle

Guys--I'm going on the above hunt this year, what calibers are you guys using? I have about one of every caliber including a 35 Whelen (Nosler Outfitter). My favorite rifle is a Gunwerks RevX in 7mm Remington Magnum shooting 168 Bergers, set up for elk out west. It also shoots 180 Bergers pretty good. This rifle is a bit heavy with a Nightforce 5-25 ATACR.

So what are you guys killing moose with? Thanks.

If you have a 303 British take that.

I lived on the Island for 9 years and the 303 was the most popular caliber used for both (by the locals) by a 10 to 1 margin.

I personally hunt moose with a 7.08 Rem and a 140 grain partition - moose will let you get close (at least down east) and give you an 18" vital area - you don't need significant firepower.

And the caribou are either "there" in a giant herd or not at all. Don't need a magnum for either on the "rock".

I got my Newfoundland moose with a .308 5 years ago.

I'm taking my 300 RUM this year, but .308 as a backup.

I did quite a bit of hiking when I went to Newfoundland….. rut was over and it was last week of October… I would bring a light rifle for sure. It was pretty rough walking where I was. I Shot mine with a .270 win

No reason your favorite rifle wouldn't work. It is your hunt and you should do what makes you happiest. I am not a Berger bullet fan for moose but I have seen them used enough to know that they will kill, I just prefer other bullets when moose are the target. What rifle do you shoot well quickly and from improvised rests and offhand? Good rests or being able to shoot from prone may not happen on the bogs and barrens. I'd flip a coin between the two rifles you mentioned and not loose any sleep or any of your other rifles that you feel would be suited and may add to your enjoyment.
The .303 British as well as the .30-30 are certainly still used to kill moose every year here in New Brunswick and Newfoundland but I'd wager since the 80's the .30-06, .308 and .270 Winchesters probably get used most often. What really matters is placing your shots well.

I did the same hunt.. (not in the same year). 6.5CM did both. Caribou is a big deer. Smaller than Elk. At least mine was.

I took my fierce edge 7mm rem mag with 160 nosler partitions and It worked quite well.

Moose are not hard to kill through both lungs. Use your favorite rifle with heaviest bullet that holds together and groups well. Just be aware they will stand there and take multiple shots making you believe you missed. I use a .300 rum 200 gr Accubonds for everything moose,elk,bear ect and they will stand there for them also but eventually start wobbling and tip over. I see your in Jersey you should drive up if you can better than flying. Also if your in the rut first week October your guide will most likely call them right up to you. Good luck.

I've killed several moose and a lot of caribou with a 300WSM without complaint.

Any of the moderately powerful cartridges with a controlled expansion bullet will work a lot more than it won't, '06, 300s, 7 mags, 35 Whelen.. all are good to go.

I've hunted moose in Newfoundland many times. Some years the shooting opportunities are lean and you need to be prepared for a long shot or you may get no shot at all. I always carried a 338RUM but that's just me. I've shot moose and bears from 54yds to just under 400yds. I did have shot opportunities over 600yds but just never dropped the hammer. A big bull moose can absorb a lot of lead so I never felt over-gunned, if there is such a thing.

If you're hunting in the timber than that's a different story all together. Last year I took a bull moose in Maine after waiting 20yrs for a non-res license. I used a Marlin 1895SBL in 45-70. At 125yds the bull didn't like the 400+ grains of bullet mass but he didn't exactly drop to the shot either. Moose often take their time after a fatal hit.

My N=1 is took my .45-70. Towards Burgeo, had a giant caribou at 400 yds necessary to pass up. Ended up taking one half that size at 150 yds with my .45-70.

Switch to moose hunting. Toted .45-70 for four days. Guide says need at long rifle for where we’re going next. Ended up shooting a meat bull that day at 110 yds.

When, if I go back, I’ll tote the longer range weapon as my choice since did cost me a huge caribou, and wouldn’t have been a problem at shorter range. Of course if your hunting heavily forested land my experience doesn’t apply.

I've taken few 'nilgai' back from where I am with 303.

If you get within 200 yards a 308 is great. Anything farther I personally use a 300wm but Ive gotten a 63 inch bull with a 7mm at 250 yards and a 62” with a 300 wsm at 200 yards. I think bullet type is important. I like barnes ttsx, hornady cx, nosler accubond/partitions, and swift sciroccos.
