We’ve been developing some new clothing pieces, which will be released this summer around early August. There have been some comments and questions about it here on Rokslide, as well as several folks asking about it at the SLC Hunt Expo. And someone might have seen video footage of some prototypes being tested in Alaska.

So for now, I’d like to put out SOME info about the context of these developments, basic info about what each piece is, and lay out the basic design intent for each piece. The 3 pieces we’re releasing this summer are a pant, midlayer, and down puffy jacket. I’ll go into more detail in the future, and of course answer questions if they come up. What I’m adding today is definitely not everything there is to know.

1 - Context.
First, let’s address the connection of these pieces with Exo Mtn. Gear. First, we are friends. I have very high respect for Exo, and hold Steve and Mark in high regard. That respect and regard pre-dates this project. I don’t speak for them, and I certainly don’t want to put any burden on them to comment on or explain anything. Of course, it’s their prerogative to share anything they want if they choose to.

Yes, there is a connection, and yes, we have collaborated with them on this project. What does that mean? Steve and Mark, primarily, have had significant input as to what the product concepts are, including the intent and desired outcome. They have had significant input on the design, materials, fit, and targeted performance of each piece. They have been testing prototype iterations of this gear for the past 2 years, with feedback and input. There is no monetary / commission incentive, kickback, or cut between Exo and OV. We - meaning Outdoor Vitals - didn’t ask Exo to collaborate with us on this project. It was the other way around.

Prior to this project, I would send Steve and/or Mark gear to test, in prototype and production form - no obligations attached. I just value their perspective and feedback if they choose to give it. They’re just great guys to test lightweight backpacking gear, and provide meaningful feedback.

In early 2023, Steve messaged me with a “give me a call.” I called, and Steve laid out his idea. To sum up his idea, Steve / Mark / Exo get a lot of questions on gear recommendations, and when it comes to clothing Steve isn’t interested in making clothes, but he likes us and wants to support a brand he likes, and feel good about that recommendation. To do that, he wanted to have first hand confidence in his clothing recommendations, so he asked if we’d be interested in coming up with some key clothing pieces designed how he would like and recommend. The quick and easy answer was, “yep, let’s go. What do you want?” I had already been developing an active insulation piece, and in addition to that we decided to start with pants and a down jacket. Off we went. Since then, testing of high fidelity prototypes has expanded from Steve, Mark, Tayson, and Me, to a group of about a dozen more guys that spend a lot of time in the mountains.

2&3 - The pieces - design intent & quick view.
Altura Dynamic Pants. They are 4 way stretch, double weave nylon. Early-mid season, and fit slightly on the trim side. Meaning they're designed for mobility without restriction, but also without a bunch of excess fabric. The knees are articulated. The waistband has an internal and adjustable belt with a cam-lock tensioner. Two front pockets, two back pockets, one thigh pocket that sits slightly forward and has a little volume built into it. And it's got zippered hip vents with a mesh lining. The pants weigh about 13-14 ounces.

Pursuit Hybrid Fleece. This is a cold weather active insulation piece. Breathability is the priority with this piece. We want to leave this piece on for an entire hunt in cold conditions. If it’s cold enough to need something other than the sun hoody and maybe a windbreaker, we want to be able to put this piece on and never take it off. This requires high breathability with just enough insulation and just enough wind resistance for those conditions. To accomplish that we use a combination of body mapped fabrics - Primaloft Evolve 75 gram active insulation, a high CFM (air permeable) 30d woven nylon, and low bulk grid fleece. The front zipper is about 2/3 length, and there are thumb loops. The hood is close fitting and not adjustable. This piece weighs 9-10 ounces.

Vantage Alpine Jacket. The puffy jacket is pretty simple. We set out to make a 16 ounce jacket with an adjustable hood and two hand pockets. As warm as we can make that and end up at about 16 ounces. That's pretty much it. It's filled with 7-9 ounces of 850 fill power ExpeDry down. The fabric is a two layer 15d nylon that is woven in a way that creates down chambers without the need to stitch them in place. This removes over 10,000 stitch holes from a similarly filled puffy, adds more than 20 percent wind and dust resistance, and adds a noticeable amount of water resistance.

Alright folks, that’s all I’ve got for today. I’ll keep adding to this thread moving forward, in addition to answering any questions that come up. Feel free to ask!

I'm excited to see these items and have been snooping the Experience Project videos closely as I think they fit a bit of a nitch that a lot of us have been looking to expand upon for some time; with what (in my opinion at least) are the current leaders in the market/competition to these products, respectively:

Altura Dynamic Pants vs Kuiu Kutana Pants (or some might suggest the Prana's)

Pursuit Hybrid Fleece vs Sitka Ambient 100/Ambient UL 60/MDWi

Vantage Alpine Jacket vs Stone Glacier Grumman Down Jacket

In the event that these products deliver and at the above listed specs, man are you guys going to disrupt the market!

My questions product specifically would be as follows (I apologize in advance for the novel haha) :

Altura Pants
A. What will the sizing structure/availability look like? (i.e. waist/inseams by 2" increments or standard S/M/L/XL sizing?)
B. What are the color options that will be available? (Assuming for our intended purposes that a grey scale and a brown/ earth tone will be available, if not that is a must in my opinion)
C. Will the pockets be zippered or flapped? (Hoping for large standard open hip pockets that can actually accommodate your hands and zippered ass/thigh pockets)
D. Length on the hip zips and single- or two-way zippers?
E. Pick resistance for the fabric and seam styling?
F. DWR coating? Potential for a future later season model with waterproofing in the knees and seat?

Pursuit Hybrid Fleece
A. Will it be available in standard and long sizing?
B. Again, what color options will be available?
C. Can you elaborate on why a 30D nylon, as opposed to a 20D like the Ambient? (I've never had any durability issues with any Ambient iteration aside from the usual piling, despite having owned and extensively used the hoody, hooded jacket and the vest in the N Idaho brush)
D. Can you detail out the mapping layout of the Evolve insulation vs the grid fleece? (I don't particularly care for the UL60 hood being w/o the Alpha insulation and it could have a little more coverage in my opinion; for example, run further down and around the front/around the arms/ect.)
E. Will the grid fleece be backed to the 30D nylon outer layer or exposed?
F. Is the hood a turret/sculpted style like the Sitka pieces, or does it have a little room to drape? (Not a fan of the super tight hoods on my mid layers)
G. Assuming no pockets on this piece?

Vantage Alpine Jacket
A. Again, with the standard/long sizing question as well as will it be upsized already/designed to fit as an outer layer? (i.e. buy your regular size and it will be roomy enough to accommodate layering/long enough in the back to cover sitting while glassing without riding up, ect.)
B. Again haha, what will our color options be?
C. Can you explain the 7-9oz range of fill? (Seems like a broad range for standard sizing deviation)
D. Can you elaborate on the baffle/chamber (or lack thereof) design and how this prevents bunching/even dispersion of the insulation?
E. Will it have simple elastic styled cuffs/bottom hem or some/any degree of adjustability?
F. What will the hood style be like? (i.e. tight to the head with some elastic banding or looser with freedom of movement, as well as any adjustability)
G. What zippers are being used and what is the hand pocket layout? (standard vs pack accommodating)

LASTLY, of course the over looming question everyone will want to know; what will pricing structure look like?

If you've made it this far, I appreciate your time and look forward to @Mark at EXO getting you guys on the podcast (don't feel obligated to address all these questions here), thanks!

- Kevin

Great questions, Kevin. A lot of those details (sizing, colors, etc) will be released. And the super-detailed questions can be discussed on the podcast.

Your last question is one that I am excited about… pricing. I haven’t heard final numbers from OV, but I do know that the pricing will be better than most other apparel with similar quality and performance.

Hell yeah, looking forward to the release of that podcast. I spent way too much time on shift last night thinking those through haha, might be more info than some people care to know.

Agreed though, pricing will be pivotal because (as you guys say all the time on the podcast) you don't/shouldn't have to spend an arm and a leg to be kitted out in clothing to go hunting; even though some of us will spend way too much on gear anyways... haha.

Two thigh pockets with wide openings please. Not sure how far “forward” you’re talking but hopefully not too much? Rear pockets are kinda pointless unless they’re big enough for a liner glove, I’m considering removing them before the zipper wears a hole through the pants from sitting on them. How about inner thigh vents along with the hip vents? And please no low rise pants! No excessively big belt loops, no one is wearing a thick belt while hunting and I hate my thin nylon belt swimming in a massive loop causing frequent adjustment.

I personally love the rear pockets on my Kutanas and don’t really like pants that don’t have at least one rear pocket. I like to put my liner gloves or work style gloves in them when sitting down and I don’t need them. They also double as kind of an ass vent if they’re mesh inside

Wish the kutanas were a mesh pocket in the rear and a little bigger then I might use them. Maybe I can modify them to vent?

All these sound awesome and I would definitely buy them all.
Please don’t make all top pieces torso lengths for people that are 6’5”. The average American male is 5’9”. Please do regular and tall sizes.
Also Pants need back pockets!
