Just thought I would make the requisite FNG post in the correct place. I’m an experienced shooter, fisherman, and general lover of everything outdoors here in the PNW. Was always interested in hunting, but had nobody to show me the ropes and never wanted to waste an animal, so I stuck to coyote calling. Was fortunate enough last year to have some friends of friends take me under their wing and go on a general season spike elk hunt last year. Unfortunately we came home empty handed, and since that trip it’s all I have really been able to think about. I’m very appreciative of them taking a risk on me and bringing me into their camp, I learned a lot.

However, one of the main things I learned was that hunting out of a trailer didn’t fully scratch the itch. So I have spent my time since that hunt focusing on how to be an effective solo backpack hunter. Being in my early 40’s, with a family at home, there are different considerations to make.

I fortunately drew a buck mule deer tag this year. So I will be doing that hunt solo, out of my pack. Have my area selected and e-scouted, and have 3 scouting trips planned before the hunt dates. Also luckily drew a party bull elk tag with the same group I mentioned earlier. Hopefully this year I will put meat in the freezer, but regardless I know I will learn a lot more.
