Well..... The time has come and I need y'all's help. My gf finally has a weekend off and were headed to either CO or WY (from NE).

My plan is to take her "shed hunting" as we've done numerous times. I'm going to take one of my smaller elk sheds in my backpack along with a trail camera and we will split up by a few hundred yards as we usually do... I will strategically place the shed where she will find it (with ring on tine) in front of the trail camera set on video (or camera haven't decided) mode to capture her reaction. Problem is..... I don't have the slightest clue where to go. We moved to Nebraska from California 5 months ago and I haven't had a chance to head to the mountains around here yet. I'd like for it to be close to a resort town so we can get a hotel that night (needs to be dog friendly).

Can you guys help me out with a particularly scenic location?

I'd be greatly appreciative of any help!

Medicine bow range just west of Laramie, WY has some cool spots. I can put you out on a ledge if you would like. Let me dig up a picture...

wow! this has got to be one of the most elaborate ways ive ever seen a guy try to get other guys shed hunting spots on line . pretty sneaky....

where ever you go make sure it is 100% public land. I buried a dog on some property I used to own. Well now I can not see the old girl. Lesson learned for me.

Haha! You guys caught me! Thanks for the suggestions, the medicine bow range would be a shorter drive than most locations for sure. Someone brought up a good point in that she is surely going to want to call friends and family so if I want to stay on the mountain it will have to be in cell reception, not sure I'd get that many places in WY?....Estes park, CO was a suggestion I've been researching and looks to be scenic?!

Gwl79902,
We did the same thing with our old Newfoundland pup. The new owners have removed her headstone I'm sure :(.

It has been a couple years since I have been back to that spot in Wyoming but even back in 2008 some of us were able to get cell reception up on the mountain. Also, one other bonus is that ledge and overlook I pictured is about 12,000 feet but you can (or could at least) drive up to right around 10,000 feet. Then it's not a bad little hike up some logging roads and stuff to get to that spot. Also, the trip back to Laramie isn't all that bad and they have hotel/motels and all of that.

I think I'll take you up on it. I was looking into Estes Park but it appears they may be a little more strict on dogs. I'd imagine I'd have more seclusion in the Medicine Bow NF?

The place where we were at has some activity. Mostly people camping out down towards the bottom and then riding ATV's up to the top. Granted, this was around Labor Day and early September so people were still getting out. I would imagine it would fine though as there are plenty of places to hike to to get away that aren't really that far.

Estes is nice but no real shed hunting. Gunnison is awesome. Red feather lakes area is also nice and you may actually find some sheds after you do the deed. There is a lot of moose up that way too. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and PMs. Colonel00 has set me up with a good looking spot. Camelcluch..... I'll have to check out those areas ;).

Were on the way now, just hoping the weather holds off tomorrow.

you might want to tape the ring to the Shed. I would hate to see her jerk up the shed and the ring goes flying.....that would ruin the mood real quick :)
