I ended up buying the mission rover and have been very happy with it. It is large enough and has a lot of nice features in terms of stowable shoulder straps and also a single cross shoulder strap. Lots of zippers though.

I've carried my Kifaru EMRII on my last 4 trips to Alaska via Alaska Air. I make sure that it is loaded so it meets the dimension requirements. It's a pain in the rear hauling a 60 lb pack plus a camera case loaded with my spotting scope, binocs, camera, etc but saves $ on extra baggage charges. The overhead bins on Alaska Air planes are fairly big so I haven't had any problems. I usually have a lot of gear, rifle case, salmon/meat boxes, etc so it's a circus bringing all that through the airport! I gut the foam in my rifle case and fill it full of clothes, fishing rods, trekking poles, etc....which also saves on baggage. There always seems to be something funky that shows up on their xray machines so leave lots of time to get through security! I've gotten some pretty funny looks from stewardas and others but that's ok!
