Hey fellas. This is kind of a random question. My 40th bday is coming up and I'd like to get out of Ohio for the week. I was thinking of loading up the truck and head out for a few days of camping and trout fishing with the dog. I've never done it before so I was wondering if anyone had any decent places to try within a couple days drive of Ohio. Any ideas? Thanks.

East or west and how far west are you willing to push the driving? Driftless would be closest. Black Hills and Mountains would be another full day of driving.

I don't know how far it is from Ohio but bozeman is kind of a fly fishing mecca. Yellowstone. Gallatin. Madison. Salmonflies should be on the Madison for a few weeks more I assume. That's kind of an epic hatch if you can hit it. You could pay for fishing in the spring creeks outside of Livingston if you really wanted to treat yourself for the birthday. This is a really great idea. I turn 40 next March and its got me thinking I should plan something for me. I'm not married. No kids. I don't want my friends and family to make a big deal out of it but I should do something awesome.

There are some great places in the east. Freestone or Tailwater fishing? Tailwater, I would recommend the South Holston River or the Clinch River in TN. The Watuga is also worth looking at and in that general Tri Corner area there are lots of Freestone creeks.

I was going to suggest western NC as well. Maybe Cherokee. Fish all day and hit the casino in the evening.

The driftless region of SW Wisconsin, SE Minnesota, and NE Iowa. Excellent trout fishing and more water than you could cover in a lifetime. Plus you have the Mississippi and Wisconsin River right there too. The lower WI river has excellent small mouth fishing among others.

Check out this blog On a fly! He fishes all over the area and is very nice and helpful if you come this way and had questions. Pictures are great and give a good idea of what the area looks like and what you could expect on your trip.

Good luck, sounds like a great adventure!

West virginia would probably be the closest, shaver's fork of the cheat river and the cranberry river are two that i can think of off the top of my head. Western north carolina is also a great destination that isn't too far, with numerous trout streams from small creeks to big rivers.

If you want to go farther east, here in southern Vt we have great native brookies, and more streams than one can fish in a lifetime. Several trophy rivers within a short distance of each other but just as good fishing off the beaten path. Headquarters of orivs is right here too. Home - Vermont Fish and Wildlife

Eleven Point river in southern Missouri. It's a national wild and scenic riverway. Call Brian Sloss at the Eleven Point Canoe Rental he can give you the latest on which part of the river is fishing best. If you fish the trophy area you have a good shot at 18" plus Rainbows.

If you're hanging stands in NE Iowa you can fish trout in your spare time.
