Nalgene bottle vs bladder

I carry both.

Most of my water is consumed from my bladder but I like a Nalgene as back up so if my bladder breaks I'll still have at least some water.

With that being said, in 15 years of use I've never had a Camelbak bladder leak on me and I've had them on during some pretty serious motorcycle crashes.

Like others mentioned, I use bladders when it's warmer out. And use bottles when it's cold out. I find I drink more water when using a bladder.

3 L bladder in pack (platypus) and I usually grab two Sobe Citrus Energy drinks and take them.
After I drink them up they become H2O/Wilderness Athlete mix bottles. They are durable, wide mothed and lighter than the Nalgene.

I carry both when bivy hunting/camping and empty the bladder first, I know when I'm down to the bottle I gotta start taking water consumption/replenishment seriously. I often fill the bottle with Gatorade or the like figuring I'll be needing electrolytes late in the day. I like the Nalgene for measuring water for my MH meals. Otherwise I just toss a Gatorade bottle or two in the pack.

My previous post was referring to my preferred method of drinking the water, but I do take along a bladder or tote for extra water capacity as my "dirty" water storage.

This year in November in Idaho, I had a Nalgene, 2 Smartwater bottles, and the 4L tote. My Nalgene and one of the SW bottles were for clean water and everything else held the "dirty" water. So I could have up to 7 liters at any one time...which would last me about 2 days. The tote was left behind when I went out for the day hunting.

The Nalgene was there to possibly use as a hot water bottle in my sleeping bag. Since I didn't use it that way once the 9 days I was out there, I'll probably be replacing it with another SW bottle next year.

What cook set are you using? Most have oz measurement markings inside the pot. I just fill my JB pot from my bladder or gravity filter setup.

I carry a Gatorade bootle to, only wieghts over an ounce. Use it to mix stuff to drink. But I always carry a 4 liter dromedary bag to sip out of.

Like Justin. Manosteel and others, I use water bottles (non-Nalgene like Dasani, Arrowhead, Gatorade, etc). They are cheap, tough enough, much lighter than Nalgenes and when they get gross, I just toss them. I have found that the ability to measure the oz's is not necessary enough to keep a Nalgene around. Haven't used a bladder in forever.

X 2. Exactly what I do. The "reserve bottle" has saved my tail more than once.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I take both.

Bladders are great for sipping on the move, but you cant scoop, dig, measure, store trash/food in them like you can inside a Nalgene bottle. I also trust a Nalgene bottle more taking a fall onto rocks.
