Mystery Ranch Terraframe

Looking at the Mystery Ranch site it appears the TF-50 is on the Guide Light MT frame, which is the same as the Selway. The TF-50 is a little smaller. It has a capacity of 3,051 ci while the Selway has 3.783. If you attach a day pack lid you can bring the capacity up to 3951 ci. The material, straps, buckles, and zippers used in construction are identical. The two pockets on the Selway have zippers, while those on the TF-50 have elastic and are listed as water bottle pockets. Both packs are listed at 5 lbs. So basically the TF-50 with the overload shelf is a bombproof 1-3 day pack you can use to get in and get your game out. All that for $200.00.
The one on sale is the older model. I think the description on the MR site is for the new model. So I'm guessing the one on sale is the guide lite?

Th pack REI has listed for sale has the guide light frame, at least the images they have up are of a pack with the guide light frame.

The Terraframe is similar in some ways to the Guidelight frame, but according to Mystery Ranch:

"Auto-lock buckles, textiles, waist belt, the frame capture (how you remove the frame from the bag) is all different. So, they carry the same but the suite of components are different."

Can I get a link

I do see that that the TF-50 has a buckle release on the frame capture. It also has buckles on the load lifters. The belt looks like it might be different. Mystery Ranch says both are made from same textile and have the same straps. TF-50 has SJ Autolock buckles and Selway has Lightweight SJ Autolock buckles. Not sure if they are the same size.

This guy compared the two and decided to sell his TF-50 and spend the extra on the Selway.

I like some external access so I don't have to continually drop my pack on the trail. I bought a lid and attached it to my Selway. It gives me external access and adds 900 ci to the pack. I can pack a week into my Selway now.
Hey professor got any pictures of this set-up?

I lost one of my straps so the black one is temporary but I think you get the idea. The female buckles are attached through the frame capture fabric . I just burned the four holes through it with a soldering iron and popped it in. You need the female buckle, the male buckle that snaps on the daisy chain, and a strap with male and female buckles on either end. I bought a couple of extra compression straps directly from mystery ranch.94766916_166052364701904_6795855146766041088_n.jpg94753005_176172356865892_4769845947129659392_n.jpg94743787_558465698383294_7638325720749441024_n.jpg95206575_566382527200183_5491147728392028160_n.jpg94925369_2517586648556301_4376994166261940224_n.jpg94622415_571988510087229_4871650093817659392_n.jpg

Awesome idea. Thanks.

When I talked to Mystery Ranch, they said the Terraframe frame and the Selway and other hunting pack frame is very similar. They have the same weight capacities. The Terraframe on sale in the 2019 version that doesn't have the new frame.

What is the new frame? Maybe the new one has the guide light MT frame and the old one just the guild light frame. Both my MR pacs have just the Guide Light frame so I do not know the advantages of the new frame.

I can't remember if the 2020 Terraframe has the guide light MT frame or a similar version (just like how the 2019 has a similar but slightly different frame). I think from talking to customer service that the 2020 Terraframe has the guide light MT.

The person I spoke to on the phone uses an older Terraframe and loves it. He's compared the 2020 Terraframe and sees pros and cons versus the older ones and has decided to stick with the pre-2020 version. I'm not that picky myself and I'm going to be ecstatic with the 2019 Terraframe. The packs I've used in the past are all not great as I'm a budget guy. $200 for a Mystery Ranch seemed like a steal to me.

I just read some reviews comparing the GL and GL MT frames. They use different buckles, but the main difference seems to be the design of the belt. The GL belt could use some more padding and also tends to slip. Apparently the new belt is a major improvement. I get the budget issue. I really want quality gear so I am always on the lookout. If I could justify the need I would grab one of the TF packs. I have three packs and two I have modified with pack lids and extra compression straps. Need a better tent before I can think about another pack.

Yep. There's a pile of guys who'll go to the GL MT frames. There are corresponding benefits to the GL frames to the point where some MR people themselves will stick with the old. I'd probably go new if I was buying knew and not worried about the extra $200 or so but not a big deal to me.

The MR people are great to talk to. I've talked to two reps before and both were top-of-the-line customer service folks. Give them a call!

There customer service is great, I agree. I had one interaction and Was treated very well.

I recently decided I'm going on my first elk hunt in 2021, a 5-7 day backpack hunt in CO. We'll have an outfitter pack an elk out if we kill one. Is this pack a deal that I shouldn't pass up, or should I shop around? I didn't know if this pack would have adequate capacity, but it does have the expansion feature...
