Mystery Ranch Pack Redundancy Question

I am looking for a good day pack for mule deer, antelope, and whitetail hunting and have been eying the Mystery Ranch Popup 18 and Popup 28. I currently have the Pintler for my longer elk hunting trips and love it. Would the Popup 28 be too redundant since I already have the Pintler?

I have both...the 18 and pintler. Yes there is a lot of redundancy on the day pack side . Not so much if your doing two or three days.

Although you could pack the shelf of a pop up for overnights and it will haul meat pretty well, it isn’t a full size pack and the bags are pretty small. It is easy for me to fill up my 28 with just day hunting gear and a layer or two.

The pintler isn’t too much bigger but the frame is a class above. Think compact pick up with a v6 vs full size with a v8.

I love my 28 and it does exactly what I want, which is haul day hunting gear in early to mid season and gives me the ability to haul meat if I get lucky or a stand or something heavy. I switch to my pintler in late season when I am carrying insulation layers just to hav more room in the bag (if mr made a 40 liter pop up bag I would buy it, hint, hint.)

I would never tell you or anyone not to buy another high quality pack if you have the means. However, there is a lot of overlap in terms of capability. The pop up is a smaller bag and it loses points on stability for a heavy load vs the pintler. The real advantage of the pop up is that it is a much more compact day pack, it is lighter and cheaper.

Only a fool thinks he can have too many Mystery Ranch packs. I have 5 now and I love them all. The only one I got rid of was the Pop up. Too small for me and that’s saying a lot because I hunted with a lumbar pack for years. If you have to have something smaller I’d go with a Mule bag only option and swap it into your GL frame.

My personal experience and the reason the popup was a standout for me was frame height. I’m not overly tall at about 5’8” and having a full length frame was driving me nuts climbing in the near vertical black tail woods of British Columbia. Trying to look up and hitting my head on the top of my frame was enough to make me go nuts.

The popup folded down is right out of the way for climbing but should haul a decent load for the way back down should I get lucky.

I just bought a Mule bag for my GL frame for when my metcalf is too much. Planning on using it as whitetail/turkey pack. Hoping it will work well for stand hauling.
