right now i have a pintler and a lid. im planning to buy a bigger bag, because the pintler- lid combo is a stretch for 3 or more days. i got a good deal on mystery ranch packs. im torn between the metcalf and the sawtooth, note both of them are the 2023 versions.
how does the sawtooth with a lid compare with the metcalf in terms of volume and organization? i really like the organization of the sawtooth but wish it was a bit bigger, i fear if i buy it i wont have any use for the pintler. on the other side the metcalf has a bigger volume but lacks organization.

I like my Sawtooth 45 and recently got a new Pop Up 30 for my sons to use. They are fine, but I told myself that my next pack would be a "real" one. Got my eye on the Exo K4 packs.

IMO, if you can save up a little more get an "alpha" class backpack in a larger size. Save your MR for daytrips.

*Edit - if you're stuck on Mystery Ranch, just get the Beartooth. Or you can just buy the bag only and swap if the frames are the same.

I have the Sawtooth and lid combo. I have used it for almost everything. I can typically get a 5 day load in there since I use an Argali Rincon and I dont carry a lot of just in case items. I have not carried meat out yet though. My most recent rip was 6 days backpacking in Colorado with it and it was great. Gear fit due to food was tight but I managed it pretty well and kept weight to around 32 lbs.
Saying all that, I am likely selling mine since I have 5 packs. Between Mystery Ranch, EXO, Stone Glacier, and Eberlestock I have almost everything covered at least twice and will be narrowing them down to 2-3 packs this summer.

do you have a metcalf? how does it compare to the sawtooth? if so im interested in buying.

I have a Sawtooth 45 and really like it for day hunts and shorter trips (max 3 nights in early season) but I got a Seek Outside Goshawk and prefer that pack despite it not having nearly the same level of organization as the Sawtooth.
