So I just acquired a new to me Metcalf with the Nice Frame. I have playing around with getting the yoke adjusted and I think I have it dialed in pretty close but no matter what I do the frame sheet seems to dig into my back and hurts quite a bit. For reference I am 5'10" and weigh about 200lbs. The yoke is a medium as well as waist belt. Can I use the pack without the frame sheet? What am I missing here? It's my 1st pack and I did a lot of research and right now I am really bummed how it feels. I put about 30lbs in it and walked around the house with it in various yoke positions for about 10 minutes. That was around 1pm today and my back still hurts. It seems the frame sheet is digging in just below my C7. Please help!!

Have someone take a pic with it on from a couple different angles. I have a couple NICE frames and can't visualize the problem you are having. Are you talking about the top of the frame? If so and it is contacting the C7 vertebrae you might have the yolk adjusted too long, and I am guessing by the problem you don't have load lifters. Watch the video below and it will likely help.

I believe you are talking about the curved plastic piece which resides where the yoke meets the frame and back pad. That plastic piece is used to split the Velcro and adjust the overall length of the suspension. After the adjustment is made, that curved piece stores in its own slot. I've never heard this complaint before but of course I believe you. Are you certain of your adjustment and is the curved piece stored in its proper location? Something just seems amiss. Refer to the video (above) and then call Mystery Ranch if needed.

I would think you could go without that curved piece if the pack feels better in use. It serves no purpose toward load support that I can tell, but does provide some contour to the area between/below the scapulae.

That sheet bothered my co-worker too. After a year of field use, he just pulled it out and threw it on a shelf. Solved his issue as I recall.

Something is strange about the way you have it set up compared to mine. The top of your load lifters look to be at about the top of your shoulders and mine are at the middle of my head. I think you might have it set up long. Where does your belt ride when you have it on with weight in it? I have the top of my belt about an inch below my belly button. More pictures of your entire body would help. And what size is your yolk? Mine is a medium and I am 5 10 as well. We will get it figured out....

I agree with others. Your load lifters should sit higher than they are. The top of the load lifters should be around the middle of your head. Can you get pictures of the whole pack on your back? That would help with getting the waist belt set properly.

View attachment 46224Ok so maybe that was a bad angle. Let me try again. I lowered it a bit from the last picture. The weight is definately on my hips. I took the frame sheet out and it feels pretty good. I obviously need to get training to lose my big ass gut and hopefully My body will like this MR pack. View attachment 46223

Can someone tell me how to get the pictures to turn out right side up? They are taken and posted from my phone and display normal on my phone but cant seem to get them to turn the right way. Thx in advance!

You have the yoke set too long. The crease in the shoulder harness, where the individual shoulder straps make the u shape around your neck, should line up with the spine (bony prominence) of your shoulder blade. How you have it set now, causes the yoke to bite into your neck. I hope I explained that well enough.

I believe that is correct. Shortening the yoke adjustment should make the load lifters ride a bit higher than they currently appear. I'm not really sure why that plastic piece is biting in however. I suppose there's a chance it's just your individual contours and anatomy. I can add that pulling the load lifter straps tight will really 'suck' the top of the pack toward your scapulae and thoracic spine. I seldom crank on mine (much) unless packing meat or a heavy gear load.

Heres a picture of mine. Don't mind the pudge, I need to drink way less beer.

once you shorten the yoke, you can also slide that trislide that the load lifter straps attach to on the shoulder straps. The trislide should be right around your collar bone, maybe slightly higher, between the top of your shoulder and collar bone. Lots of adjustments that can be made, whenever i get a pack, i try it, then change something and try it. And where ever it feels best i leave it.

Ok so great advice on that trislide SR80 thx, Corbland thx for the photo that helped alot. I moved the yoke and here is where I am at now. I gotta say though that damn frame sheet really digs into my back though no matter what I do. The very top portion which is also the widest just hits me wrong. I am really starting to feel like the princess and the pea here! Please see new pictures.View attachment 46273

Just yank it out. I have a NICE with some DIY bayonet extensions and when you actually have positive load lifter angle the sheet doesn't matter much. As far As I can tell the sheet was originally intended to try and compensate for the unworkably short NICE, once they caved and provided the frame extensions it is largely unneeded.

No pics and attachment links didn't work. I am really curious about why this is happening...meaning the plastic piece digging in. In the 2 NICE frames I owned I was never aware of that piece even once after fitting the pack and replacing the pad in it's slot. Odd.
