Anybody run a MR 3DAP as an EDC bag? Looking for something to carry EDC gear and also function as an occasional travel and whitetail tree stand pack.

Looks like a decent sized pack with good internal organization but curious about real world user reviews.

Can't order a Kifaru Urban Zippy in Ranger Green and I don't care for the Antero.

Thanks, Bill

Ive used a 3DAP a few different times in my pack obsession. Overall its a great pack. Approx 2000 cu in...its a little on the big side for edc for me but definitely doable. I have carried it in that capacity. As an overall, do everything pack I would say it its an excellent choice. Comfortable, just large enough for an overnighter (depends who you are and how you pack), small enough to carry everyday. Build quality has always been top notch like Kifaru. Why don't I have it still? 1) pack obsessed and the grass is always greener on the other side. 2) They stopped offering some of their accessories that I felt were very useful. 3) while the Military line and Fire line are still made in the USA, their choice to make the other lines offshore left a bad taste in my mouth. Thats just personal preference.

I like Kifaru's Coyote Brown and Olive Drab in the Urban Zippy. Have you looked at those or just really want the RG?

I'm a definite Kifaru fan but not having the UZ in RG is making me look elsewhere for my EDC needs.

Love the UZ platform (had one in FG & CB and still have one in MC) but wanting one that looks less tactical/hunting/military for EDC and travel. Ranger Green seems to be the perfect urban regular guy color. Can't believe it's not an option!

Been playing with the Antero and 14'r but both don't quite fit my needs like the UZ and will probably go back to the shop.

Not a big fan of MR for those exact reasons and kinda feel the 3DAP is still more tactical than I care to run but it has features I like that get close to my UZ pack.

Thanks for chiming in Mike.

I've had one for quite a few years now that I use while XC skiing. Very nice pack and the build quality is top notch. I'm a huge fan of their 3 zip design that gives really good internal organization. There's a strap setup internal for a radio that I removed...just a lot of straps for somethinng i don't have. I do like that the waist belt can be folded up and stowed when you're using it as a carry-on or to schlep around in town.

I use a DIY trizip for my everyday/commuter pack, and I think that zipper and compression strap arrangement is near perfect for daily use. Tons of access, organization is mostly internal which I like, and massive overflow options either out the top or front. 90% of the time I use it as a top loader but every now and then I can open the front to find something at the bottom. The closed zipper on the 14er doesn't make much sense to me as it is much more limiting then a trizip.

The MR suspension is a little heavy and bulky for my taste, so mine is much simpler. I really liked their older recreational versions of the 3dap, like the sweetpea and big sky.

I agree LBFowler. Would love to see some pics of your bag. Thanks for chiming in.

I think you would like the old Dragonslayer or Big Horn much more than the 3DAP...but MR stopped making them and it's hard to find someone willing to let one go (especially the Big Horn). Tell Aron you've spent/sent enough business his way to warrant a custom Ranger Green UZ headed your way. :) I hope you find what you're looking for.

I've made a few trizips, this is the one I use most, made it out of upholstry fabric with an X-pac lining:

I was too cheap for waterproof zip so it is plain ol' #10. Has a chunk of foam and a simple wire frame for structure.

Bill I used to run one when I was a tree topper. It held my lunch, extra pants, extra shirt, rain jacket, wallet, phone, keys, Slippers, 3 sets of gloves 2 headlamps 1 flashlight, LARGE Med kit, Large Stanley thermos and a Carhartt arctic vest on the inside, then climbing spikes, lifeline, harness, helmet and an ass load of carabiners on the outside.

When I moved into an office, it was WAY to big for an everyday carry bag. If I didn't come to my office everyday or worked exclusively at sights I would probably still run it, but now all that stuff has a place in my office, I don't need to lug it around everywhere.

Now I use a TAD light speed, it carries a laptop, pens, a portfolio some essentials and some snacks. It is the perfect size, as it can go under chairs, desks, behind seats, pretty much anywhere, the 3day could not.

The TRI-ZIP is my favorite bag design of all time and it allows you to use the entire space available and organize it very well.

Thanks again for the info.

Received an email today that the UZ will eventually be made in RG. All is well in the universe and I can focus my OCD elsewhere. Thanks again for everybody's help.

Ran 3DAP for EDC usually for Fall/Winter/Spring. Over 20lbs, l'll add the Live Wings to the belt, to move the weight to the hips.
Overseas travel where it'll be outside urban area l'll use the 3DAP. Urban, it'll be the MR ASAP.
Hammock camping I switch with MR Rush or Coulee 40.
Spring/Early Summer rain season switch to MR ASAP.
Hot Summer, switched to HPG Tara.

You can't go wrong with the 3DAP until start using for office, e.g laptop. Get the MR Urban Assault or 2DAP for that.

I had one for a while. A few overnighters with it. A bit too large and heavy for EDC. I was using it as a hunting day pack but it hadn’t been in the woods since I bought the pop up 28.

I use a smaller mr pack or a 3 way briefcase if I am carrying a laptop.

To be the desinter...

The 3DAP is, or I should say was, an issued bag where I work. It is without a doubt the most disliked modern pack I have ever seen. This may be because dudes were putting more weight than in it than it can handle, but with more than around 15lb-20lbs guys despised it. “A sack of dead weight” was the common thought. It wasn’t because they didn’t know how to use a good bag- they have multiple Kifaru, SG, HPG, along with hiking packs/bags. They just really didn’t like the 3DAP.

I know guys like the bag, so this is just a different view.

The bag that has gotten the most use of any I have ever had, that I never thought it would, is the Fjallraven Stubben. Seems weird, but is simple, doesn’t look “tactical, well layed out, fits perfectly under an airline seat, and using it as a seat is awesome.

Mr Form,
I stumbled across mentions of this Fjallenraven Stubben and I've been very intrigued. Any long term use opinions / review? I've found a used one for sale in my area but I'm not really sure it fills my needs as a medium distance hike-in day hunter in Colorado (mostly later seasons elk & deer). I'm highly intrigued by the design for organization and shooting off it, but not thinking its great for packing out meat...
