Hey guys. Been training my 1.5 year old lab to be my hunting partner this year and we went on our first overnight trip/scout trip. She did really good, was very happy she stays behind me while walking and doesn't chase game, she didn't care for her backpacking bed I got her isn't a plush as her bed at home but after some fuss we had a good night's sleep! Anyone else hunt or pack with their dogs?IMG_20210709_104507.jpg

Yes I do. I have a rescue 80lb pit mix mutt. He's been out on the trail since he was a little pup and absolutely loves it. I swear he's channeling one of my long gone English pointers the way he acts and runs in the field. A bit of a tent hog and doesn't care for his bed either (wants to squeeze up on my pad) but he carries his own pack and stuff so we're GTG :)

I have a year old catahoula that I’m hoping will be ready next year. He’s still chasing critters a bit, we’re working on that, but besides that he’s attached to my hip! Looking forward to many adventures with him. Congratulations on getting her out!

I had little luck with keeping ticks off my dog until he was old enough for Bravecto. Topical treatments just didn't seem to prevent nor last. I guess I'm no help for this life stage but couldn't be happier with Bravecto. I recommend adding it to the list of treatments to look into

obviously ticks are inevitable and come with the territory of owning a dog, just wondering if ya guys are doing anything else outside of the normal meds to help combat it besides your finger nails or tweezers. My dog currently takes Simparica Trio - a flea tick and heartwom med in one chewable - but was wondering if there was anything else or if i should switch to topical, but you had no such luck?

I took my late dog shy-Ann backpacking with me on a section of the p.c.t she wore a harness pack and carried all her food . She had to wear dog booties on some of the volcanic sections , it was adorable but she didn’t like them much . We had a good time she will be missed.

We take ours on all camping trips. He loves it and gets super excited when he sees the camping gear come out. I took a bed for him in the first trip, he ended up on top of my sleeping bag and eventually just laying on the floor of the tent, so we don’t even bother with a bed for him anymore. He runs and probably does 3 miles to our one on the trail. The only problem we have had is he doesn’t eat his normal dog food. So we bring a shit ton of milk bones, treats and peanut butter for him.

I hunt a lot with my GSPs. On my 7th one now. GSPs are not the stay behind you kind of dogs, it's like let them out and stand back while they go burn of some energy. I MHO they are the best all around dog, great pointers with great nose, most if not all these days are retrievers as well. They have webbed feet and make good water dogs. They are great family dogs but, like mentioned, they are high energy. I prefer males because I have found they work to please me, where as the females work to please themselves, not o say they aren't great hunters, it's just been my experience males are better. Remember, they call females bitches for a reason. My nephew has Goldens and they are great for pheasant and grouse. Also, very family oriented. Fact is I love all hunting dogs.1

My dog goes everywhere except big game hunting. Got some funny looks in Utah with some of the places she hiked with us. Usually just sleeps on my sleeping bag no matter what I try, let her in if she starts getting cold. She’s 1.5 so this will be first year really hunting after some pheasant last year!

glad to hear all the others getting their dogs out. I think i got lucky getting such a chill lab, sure she likes to play but when the pack and the gun come out she just trots behind me, took a bit of training but shes pretty sharp. What kind of packs are you guys using for your dogs? I didnt realize the importance of keeping a equal load on either side of her pack, i put a wet tarp in one side and her bed in the other and i looked back and it was all flopped to one side haha so it went in my pack after that

Ruffwear Palisades? Whatever their biggest one is the one we use for pack trips. Have a smaller one for day trips. Yeah I learned really fast it had to be loaded evenly. Just like a pack mule. Imagine that 😀

We use a Bravecto collar and that helps with ticks. Other thing I am going to try is Peppermint scented shampoo. Ticks don't like the scent. That said, I significantly reduce my time in the woods during the warmer months. Too many snakes, chiggers and ticks where I live to make it worth while. We stick to the gravel roads and maintained trails this time of year.

My dogs go everywhere with me as well...except big game. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to ohr retriever a few months back, but we have one great family/hiking dog still. First time I took them, I put their cord on the pole in my supertarp...they pulled my tent down about 2am, self-critiqueing.

Anybody bring their dogs big game hunting? How do you justify that to the game warden if you have a dog, but "hunting" with dogs isn't allowed? We're down to just one family dog, but I am picking up my DK in August and aside from upland, I would like to have him join me on big game hunts. My worry is, they can be trained to track game both scent and blood, so curious how fish and wildlife officer may view having a trained dog along on say a rifle Elk hunt. Any thoughts?

Also, I put orange on my husky year round, don't want some a-hole to argue they thought it was a yote/wolf and try to take a shot at it.

I have a 3 year old lab/Wirehair cross. She goes everywhere with me. She’s hell on birds too. Kind of a princess in the tent/fussy sleeper. She’ll crawl in the sleeping bag if I’d let her! I just pack a lightweight foam pad for her to sleep on. She has to be pretty tired to stay in the tent all night too (we use a SO tipi). I really couldn’t ask for a better companion tho!

My husky/lab mix loves hiking with me and gets excited when I walk out to the truck with a pack. I have the bright orange ruff wear pack because he looks like a fluffy black bear. I'm going to try an overnight trip at the end of July.
