My Dad

Lot going on obviously
Moms first night alone, said she did well. Had enough to keep her mind occupied, even went to her exercise group :)

My brother showed up and first thing he asked was about the firearms and "he knows a guy". Out of respect for the old man, I'm sure you all can figure out my brother.

So, the firearms, read through the posts and have gained some knowledge. They will sit now, and they are safe and in a safe. Looking at lining up an auction for his woodworking tools as I don't woodwork, and my mom mentioned again downsizing the house.

Considering the move back up north to be closer to her. I really hate moving back to the city. Yet, I haven't really hunted or even shot much in the last few years. It's just the whole atmosphere of city living and the cold weather. Never would have thought 3 hours difference and the weather would be so different. Not to mention more people.

Thanks all

Can't add advice, just wanted to say condolences on the loss of your dad. Mine is getting up there and you've reminded me to reach out and talk to him today, so thank you.

Good luck with the guns etc.

Passed away last night. Collapsed at home, mom called EMS and took him to the hospital Friday afternoon. Had a head bleed and didn’t recover. He was very active in his retirement, had a workshop, gardened, worked the yard, and still played video games in his 70s. :D

I need help. Dad was a gun owner and owned many firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
My folks live in Ohio and I’m in West Virginia.
I may keep a few and while they don’t need money I’d like to sell most and give mom the money.
What is the proper/legal way to do this as they on paper in his name? I’d like to transfer them to me for the above purposes.

Thanks friends.
Oh my god. I can't help with the advice that your asking for, but I'm very sorry for your loss.

When my stepfather lived in OH died my mom said a few guns were spoken for, probably as payment for stuff done around the house.
The guns were inventoried and me and my 2 brothers got first pick. What was left my cousin got to pick the rest was sold or she kept.
I live in NH and just drove home with my guns

My dad had to figure it out with my Grandpa who passed away this past Thanksgiving. My dad and uncle picked a couple they wanted and the grandkids that actually shot or hunted picked oldest to youngest. Of course we actually get along and asked first if there are any that anyone wanted 1st.

Obviously not legal advice but sounds like it is between your mom, brother, and yourself. No reason to do transfers and all that other crap. Go to the house and pick them up.

So, my mom met with the family attorney.
He said all the firearms are hers to sell or keep.
Being that it’s her decision, you can ask your mom if you can keep a couple and see if she wants help selling the others.

The 4473 form you mentioned earlier is a background check that your dad completed when he brought the guns. You do not need to transfer them to yourself because you’re his son inheriting his guns.

So if I were to sell them, say across state lines. Is that legal?

Sorry for your loss!! Both of my parents are gone and I’m an only child. Feels very odd not having them around! God bless you and your family

So if I were to sell them, say across state lines. Is that legal?
It all depends on each individual state's laws. Take for instance California, some firearms are not legal to sell there even if it's legal to own/ sell them in your state.
Yes, from your FFL to whomever is purchasings FFL
I'd follow this advice. Going through an FFL will help keep you out of trouble. The cost is more, but it's far safer.

I work in a gun store and in our area sales have dipped dramatically. We think it's because of all the tariff uncertainty. Since the lawyer said they go straight to your Mom you could keep them in the safe and just wait for a better time to sell. You could ask the lawyer if you could just drive up there and get the firearms to sell at your house, with your Mom's permission of course.
