I wish I had been on about 10 more goat hunts before my own. Judging the difference between an 8.5" billy to a 9.5" billy was extremely difficult for me. Unless they were standing side by side it was hard to gage how big each billy truly was. I took lots of pictures of them and tried to compare them to each other, that seemed to help a bit.
Another thing I did with the pictures is I would put them into "crop" mode in my phone, then I would use the graph lines that pop up to judge the distance from the nose to eye, then compare that to horn length. Before I figured out that idea I was using little sticks and holding them against my screen for a distance reference.
