I thought some of you mite enjoy my 2024 Adirondack buck video from this year, I started carrying a GoPro camera years ago attempting to self film some of my backcountry hunts for family and friends, eventually I decided to share a couple on a friends YouTube channel, and they’ve been doing well on there, so here it is, I hope everyone likes it, and thanks for watching! Jon

Great buck! What do you think he weighed? What region of the Adirondacks was this?
Thank you! I’m pretty sure he was 186 dressed, this was a day or so after he was killed, he scored 149 5/8” gross, I literally hunt most of the Park depending on the year, I take it pretty serious and do a lot of scouting year round, this buck in the video above was killed in the Northern section of the Park.

Makes me want to get back into hunting the Adks. What kind of trail cams do you use? I think you mentioned cameras in this video or another one on tracking 200.

Great video. I've hunted up west of Schroon lake a few years. Those that haven't hunted the Adirondacks don't appreciate how difficult it is to even see a deer let alone a buck of that quality. I have wondered for a long time why the deer density is so low, the animal density really.
I hike up there way more than I hunt and always get a chuckle out of how serious they take the bear safety around lake placid. Like there are bears around every tree waiting to attack. They don't get that paranoid in grizzly country, lol.

You’re spot on, we just experienced the worst winter I can remember in over 30 years, our already low deer numbers are about to get a lot worse from the spring scouting that I’ve done, so much of the land inside the “blue line” receives zero forestry management, and with almost no ag land as well, it’s the perfect recipe for a poor habitat, thanks for watching I appreciate it!!! I have one more video on that same channel as well if anyone is interested I’ll post it below, I appreciate all the kind words! -Jon Hill-

Part of why there is no ag is that the soil is thin, rocky and infertile across much of the region—more so than many of the areas people think of as similar. The areas in similar lattitudes and with similar weather that support higher deer densities either have massive industrial timber harvest across the region, more fertile soils, lower elevation/less snow depth, or combos of those factors. BUT it can be a blessing too…try to track a deer in an area with higher density of animals, and theres so many tracks it can be near impossible. Plus it keeps the riffraff away. 😉

Re: bears. The lake placid/keene area has a big problem with habituated bears. Its not that theyre dangerous like a grizzly, its that there are so many people camping in warm wx months that even miles in the backcountry the bears are totally habituated to people. Camp along the popular hiking trails or roadside campgrounds in the high peaks area and you have an almost 100% chance of having a bear visit your site looking for food. Its all just an effort to try to keep the bears wild and not dependent on human food. Touroids take a lot of convincing on this. I worked around there for many years, even in the 80’s and 90’s you could bank on bear problems every single night, and it has gotten exponentially worse since. Havent backpacked there in the past few years so if its gotten better thats a good thing, and likely due to beating people over the head with info on it.
