I just returned from my first Moose hunt ever. It was the hardest hunt of my life!! I was in the northern Yukon last week. I got lucky on the 9th day and ran into this guy.

Flew into base camp on Thursday 9/24/15. Had to spend the night there because our flight from Whitehorse was 5 hours late due to weather.

Friday 9/25/15. Day 1
Flew to the Hart river where I met up with my guide. We landed at 12:45 pm. Could not hunt until 6:45 pm because of flying law. I saw 15 moose in the valley from the plane. We started hunting at 7:00 pm and at 7:30 saw a 60" plus bull but he presented no shot before running into the willows. We went back to camp and ate spaghetti. Rained all night.

Saturday 9/26/15. Day 2
Woke up to high wind and heavy snow. No moose seen all day. Turned out clear and 19 degrees that night.

Sunday 9/27/15. Day 3
Weather was cloudy in the am and sunny in the afternoon. Saw a yearling bull about 4:30 pm. We moved camp down river 3/4 of a mile and set up under a pair of huge spruce. Rained all night. Only 34 degrees.

Monday 9/28/15. Day 4
Hunted all morning, no moose seen. Broke camp and floated 2.5 miles of river. Saw 3 bull moose. Set up camp across from moose on a grizzly trail with a track bigger than my foot. Rained all night.

Tuesday 9/29/15 Day 5
Rained until lunch. Broke camp floated 3 more miles of river and hunted hard all afternoon no moose seen. Set up camp at sunset. Was a pretty sunset. Rained again all night.

Wednesday 9/30/2015 Day 6
Hunted hard early. No Moose seen. Broke camp early and floated and hunted. Started snowing around noon we called in a 3 year old moose Too young to shoot and did not quit for 5 hours. Snowed 5" wind blew 30 mph. We reached the end of our river and could not be picked up because of the weather. Pitched tent and set up camp.

Thursday 10/1/2015 Day 7
Coldest morning yet. Waiting in camp for plane to come move us. We moved to the Olga-vie river where we spotted a 60" Bull. We blew up the boat and floated down wind and waited quietly without a fire for 6 hours. We saw 3 grey wolfs walking down the river as we waited. We made our stalk and saw the bull only 200 yards in the bush, but the timber was too thick to shoot again!!! Both shooter Bulls have been this way. We floated downs a little farther and set up camp in the dark. It was a clear night and we saw the northern lights. (Wow). It was -10 degrees, coldest night yet.

Friday 10/2/15 Day 8
Woke up early and saw a cow and a calf. Floated 15 miles and no moose seen. Waiting on the planes to move us again. Plane moved us back to the same island as yesterday. Big moose still there. We seen him crossing the river in the plane. We floated backdown and saw a cow & calf. We called until dark with no luck. Set up camp and will try again tomorrow. Not as cold tonight.

Saturday 10/3/15 Day 9
-5 degrees this morning. Finally learned how to sleep warm. Wore wool socks, wool balaclava, goose down on feet, bag liner, 2 pair Long johns and goose down on head. Also used 4 stick on body warmers.
Sat on river at camp and called and had breakfast & coffee, no moose. We walked around island no moose. Walked back to camp and made sausage & eggs. Smoked a cigar and waked back around island and called in my moose. I shot him 3 times, once in the chest and twice behind the right shoulder. We broke camp and drug the boat around the island and looked at him up up close for the first time. Wow what a big animal. Warren started skinning him and cut his leg pretty bad. About an hour later Woody & Warren J floated by and helped skin and quarter the moose. It began to snow pretty good so we sat up the tents and finished the moose. W J cooked us moose tenderloins, Mac & cheese & beans. I had hot apple cider. It was a good meal. Standing in the snow. We dried out by the fire & went to bed.

Sunday 10/4/15 day 10
Woke up and had breakfast and loaded everything up and floated down the river. Met the planes and made the long journey back to Basecamp. I had my first hot shower in 11 days. We had salmon for dinner and went to bed.

Monday 10/5/15 day 11
Had a good breakfast, took group photos. Met the charter plane and flew back to Whitehorse.

I used my Weatherby Accumark in a 300 Weatherby mag, Barnes TSX 180 grain. But if I were to do it over again I would take a bigger gun with a bigger round nose bullet that could shoot thru brush.
