Muzzleloader Recommendation-Elk Gun

Last I checked the woodman patriot is only offered with 209 breech which is not legal in Idaho or Oregon. My cheap traditions pursuit does well enough but man it’s tough to keep rust off of. But with open sights I’m 2-3 inches at 100 and minute of elk to 185. Took a 6 point bull at 130 and a whitetail buck at 125 this season.

Here’s the thing you gotta realize, we’re on a very selective forums.. You are in a niche community within a niche community.
The information gained within the recorded pages of this website is invaluable and the collective minds information in here would be some of the most informative anywhere on the world wide interwebs. There is a lot of individuality to sports such as hunting and target shooting, firearms building. It’s not often a team sport . It’s like wrestling vs football. With that, you will have a lot of individual opinions on the micro side of things and you have to learn to weed through it.

An out of the box cva wolf would probably be looked down upon and maybe used as a boat paddle if a self rescue situation arose,,,,,maybe. Probably better as an anchor for those who spend hours a week on the range researching loads, competing, shooting only a muzzleloader through the entirety of their season. It would be worthless to someone who would rather pick up their ml bs their high end bolt action during rifle season.
That’s not the person cva is targeting anyhow. At some point it’s like the guy w the f350 platinum laughing at the guy next to him running a beat up f150 inline 6 pulling a loaded landscaping trailer. Hey budddy, it’s getting the job done.

Find out what your true intentions are, are you aiming to be that aficionado, walk that trail of frustration and patience to build out loads, shoot weekly for fun and to improve as a self competition. If so, the cva would not ve for you.

If your trying to find a decent priced ml to throw over your shoulder and hunt game a couple times a year, cva or the likes is where it’s at.

As for weight, that wolf is awful light compared to others I have. But then again, I don’t worry too much about that stuff.

209 or LRMP module plug. Correct - no percussion cap option (currently…).
I told them on the call they could have my money and at least 2-4 others I know if they were to make that an option. They seemed to not care in the least about my recommendation, which from a business perspective probably makes sense. I ended up just getting another traditions pursuit and it's just okay enough. Super light and I can't really tell if the groups are the size they are because of my limitations as an open sights shooter or the gun. I do know that it shoots every bit as well as my friends CVA accura LRX.

The percussion cap limitation is a very small market since virtually all states allow 209s.

I have had the CVA MR-X and currently have the Woodman Patriot in .45 cal. I may have gotten a bad one but that CVA I had was the biggest POS I have ever owned. Any issue you could imagine with a muzzleloader that CVA had it. Accuracy issues(I tried EVERYTHING), Horrible corrosion issues even with only using BH 209 and cleanings after every shooting, Trigger and hammer issues that caused the trigger to stick when that hammer was cocked. I owned that gun for about 3 months and replaced it with a woodman. The woodman Patriot is just such a superior product. Super high quality, Sub MOA with the right loads, light weight and unbelievably reliable.. I would buck up the extra few bucks and get the G3. You wont regret it when that bull steps out and you can pull the trigger on a gun you know will hit the mark rain or shine.

Imagine my surprise……

I have a cva optima v3. I’m a mechanically inclined dude. Directions, nahhhhh.
I got mine to shoot within 3” at 125 yards. Pellets at 150gr. Look, I know you can dial a smoke pole in with time and granular stuff, i don’t look at it as enough roi to deal with it.

End of last season I was having cocking issues. Trigger was never affected. Broke it out before this years ml season and I couldn’t get the hammer to lock back and trigger was funky as hell. I did not realize you could remove the firing pin. Once I did that and cleaned down in there and the hole and some other spots, it was good as new, now I know and havnt had the issue again since. Took down 2 nice bucks this year.

Are there nicer rifles out there, sure. Is it worth it investment to me, prob not. It’s what I consider the 870 of shotguns. There are nicer ones, but the 870 works just fine.

I have owned 2 different cva’s all were purchased years ago, an old omega, which was stupid accurate, and now an accura which is more than adequate since I’m in Co with an open sight. I like the idea of a woodsman patriot and I may upgrade some day, but the old accura gets the job done and hasn’t left me wanting more… at least not yet

I agree. If you are ok with 3 inch groups at 125 and maybe some fit and finish issues then the CVA will work. Especially for the price point being 1/3 of what the woodman is. But to put all that work into getting on game and the hammer not cocking because of poor quality? I’ll pass. I know people who love their CVA and have never had issues. I may have just gotten unlucky.
