We hunt them in similar terrain. Not much of a difference from what I see there. And whitetails in open country do stop and look back.

I don't disagree with much that Colorado V said, but he is talking more about the hunters than the hunted, and the original question was about the quarry.

One of the things that makes MD hunting such a splendid experience is the habitat they live in. Especially for a hunter so used to "chasing" whitetails from a tree stand or pop up blind, where 100 yds is a long way to be able to see, the open country of the west is an absolute delight.

Then there is the archery vs rifle factor. Again its the difference between open country and wooded, where the level of difficulty for the archer is so much greater in open country. Taking a great MD with a bow is something I will never be able to do and I admire those who can.

A lot of eastern whitetails are taken on private land from well established stands that have proven to be effective for years. Public land whitetails provide a much higher level of challenge, especially because just a bit of hunting pressure puts the big bucks in stealth mode and it takes time in the field and boots on the ground to find them.
