Mudroom Ideas

I'm planning to build a new home in Idaho next year. Rural area on a 1 acre lot. Can drive my UTV out of the new place and be in the hills within 10 minutes. Looking forward to all the upland game hunting in the area too.

Planning for a good mudroom as part of the build. Just the wife and I, the kids are grown and gone. I envision a bench large enough for three people, some open storage beneath the bench for boots, a couple of drawers for the dogs stuff and some overhead storage for hats and such. A slop sink and a dog/boot washing area at floor level. A bit of counter space..

What am I missing? any ideas from y'all that have them? Would you do anything different? Pictures are welcome if you care to share.

I opened the thread to say dog wash but you got it. If I were to build that's one thing I will be sure to have.

A super close bathroom if possible off mudroom with some type of hard flooring same as mudroom so if needed you can use without boots coming off.

I think a mudroom is a great idea.

When my house was chopped in half by a huge oak tree, we remodeled our laundry room to make it bigger, extending it into our long garage and added this little bench.

On a farm I think a family would want a bigger area

Some friends of ours put a big raised Stainless dog wash station in their mud room- it's a great idea.

My last house I built in California had a back entrance that went into a large mud room, coat room, storage room, laundry room, deep wash trough for kids and dogs, and the room had a connected full bathroom with walk in shower. The entire thing was full tile floor with heat in the floor, the first 3 feet of the walls were also tiled. I put a seamless floor drain along the outside wall that tied into the main plumbing line to the septic tank. So I could take a hose and just wash the whole main part of the room out. One thing I’ll do on the next one is double the amount of windows and double the amount of air vents. Get rid of that wet dog smell faster and ventilate it better.

I’m building another custom house here in the next year or so and will do pretty much the same room.

Everything you listed is good. I’d add: washer/dryer in or directly adjacent to mud room (muddy clothes come off — straight into the washer), dedicated boot dryer space, make sure it has good airflow for drying wet stuff (dedicated heater vents, etc), make sure it has another door to close it off from rest of house, lots of hooks to hang stuff, plugs to charge headlamps, etc.

Good tips so far. I hadn't gave the "humidity" much thought. Planning on two windows that can be opened for sure. The draft plan view has the laundry room and half bath immediately adjacent.

Also thinking a dog door next to the man door connected to the breezeway outside.

Never built a home from scratch before so lots to think about.

I had a mudroom in my barn at my last place. I put a washer and dryer in it. Game changer.

You are fancier than me. My mud room has treated 2x4 floor with 3/8" spacing for the mud to fall. A bench to sit on for pulling off and putting on boots. Storage under the bench for my wife's shoes. An extensive coat rack for coats and coveralls and three shelves for supplies (gloves, bug spray and what-ever).

The most important is an electric wall heater that dries clothing and boots and makes your life pleasant.

I have a crank out window for ventilation in the summer. That room has an exterior door into the laundry room which has a sink, warm weather coats, and a washer, dryer, hot water tank, and pressure tank for my water system.

I find it works well for a ranch with snowy/ muddy boots and ranch clothing.
