Just tell them that the wolves they voted to reintroduce will even things out in 5-10 years. Oh, and how many of those people love to feed sweet little Bambie that hangs around the hood. You know, the cat food...

Just curious about the CO regs: can you kill any animal in defense of your pet or it specifically Mtn lions? Had a buddy who’s dog got royally f-d up by a Buck in his (fenced) backyard. The rutting Buck attacked his lab, was pinning it down with its antlers and left it with abdominal puncture wounds, cost him several thousand dollars.

You guys love bringing wolves up at every opportunity, lol. What happened? Did one grab your wife's ass at the bar? Has a wolf ever done something directly to you?

Wolves aren't going to hop fences in the suburbs. If you let your dogs run in the woods off-leash, sure you might lose one to a wolf some day. That's just the nature of things though and elicits no sympathy from me.

Outside of that, I don't see how wolves figure into a discussion about cougars doing cougar stuff. Am I missing something?

I live and run hounds in the general area, there are a lot of cats in the developed areas on the Front Range. They don't get hunted and as a result never learn fear of people and dogs. There are plenty of us that would love access to run our dogs in the area, but the type of people that live there don't like that idea. This is precisely what they deserve.

Bingo bingo. They can deny reality, but eventually they cant deny the consequences of denying reality. Life isnt a Disney movie. Lets hope it starts catching some of the dog owners next *fingers crossed*.

You can not kill any animal in defense of a pet. Pets are considered personal property and you can’t use lethal force against wildlife in defense of personal property. Same goes for a bear digging in your trash can.

This comment isnt going to age well. Just wait and see.
Are wolves doing that in other places? Awhile back, a guy on here claimed that they were but when I looked it up, it was an article about wolves ambushing hunting dogs....in the woods. I'd appreciate it if you could share a link to an article about it because I don't want to be talking out of my ass.

As far as I know, wolves are pretty reclusive creatures that do not invade the suburbs, hop fences, and then steal pets. I've seen plenty of videos of coyotes doing that and I shot at one (missed) in WV that was trying to jump my fence. But I've never heard of wolves doing that.

What a wild story. Dog stalking cougars, dudes hiking with spears, leaving your dead pet on the hill for ravens, specialists in finding lost dogs! This thriller has it all!
And this town sounds like it needs a nice wolf pack running the hood too, some real nature turf wars

Colorado is already busting at the seams with people recreating in the outdoors, introducing wolves just sounds like a great recipe for more human wildlife conflicts. But what do I know, I’m just a guy on the internet with an opinion.

But as I understand it, you can kill a bear if you’re defending livestock. A bear killed almost 50 of my meat chickens last spring but I didn’t want to run the risk of some judge deciding that those chickens were pets and not livestock. Anybody know how to be sure (legally in Colorado) of the distinction?

I ended up running electric wire and that kept old bruin away.

Nature never ceases to amaze me.
I live in Texas bro we don't have wolves here I'm no expert.
Bobcats have invaded a subdivision close to where I live and eating small dogs and cats.
If Mt lions and bobcats and coyotes and foxes and bears do it your gonna tell me wolves will be the sole holdout?

I’m not saying that they are going to sneak into towns and steal babies, but there will most likely be more human/wolf conflict in Colorado when/if a decent population gets established. Colorado is different from Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. We have a much larger population and have smaller tracts of open wilderness. You can hardly go 20-40 miles in any direction without hitting a town that’s beautifully nestled in the mountains. Thanks to all the people moving out of Denver or into the state these little towns are all bursting at the seams or expanding as fast as they can.

You don’t live around wolves, do you? Here’s an article about wolves killing a mountain lion in a neighborhood near Ketchum, idaho. http://archives.mtexpress.com/index2.php?ID=2005125077#.Y7T4HCVlAlQ

Correct any predatory animal posing a direct threat to livestock can be killed. However I believe Colorado revised statutes title 35 defines livestock as needing to be raised for profit but I’m not 100% on the full definition.

There’s some good info in this brochure from cpw

Way down the road, at a much later date, it's very possible that some wolves will adapt the way these other critters have. Maybe just one here or there for awhile. Maybe they'll all adapt at some point. Idk

So what is the line that differentiates between pet and real property. If I buy a dog from hunting lines it is being used for competition to prove its abilities to have it bred and sell pups. It just happens to also live in/on my personal property. What if the dog is there to protect my live stock (of any kind), it is real property since it is used for protection of something that may produce income. Lots of ways to skin that cat.

I agree, CO definitely has a human problem. It's a shame how urban sprawl and resort building has gotten so out of control there.

I'm curious as to what sort of human/wolf interactions are you (or anyone else) worried about? Like pet killing, livestock predation, etc.

I don't live nearby any significant number of them. There is a pack that ranges thru every so often. Does that matter?

That's a cool article! Thanks for sharing it. I always wondered if they ever killed lions.
No problem. It’s ironic to me all the earth lovers that build their massive homes on critical winter range around sun valley and then complain about the deer and elk eating their landscaping and damaging the golf courses. Then they freak out when the lions and wolves follow the game down and their pets start to disappear from their backyards. That what happens when you build your mansion where the wildlife need to go to survive the winter. But anyway, rant over.😁

I assumed you didn’t live around wolves because everywhere that I’ve lived and there’s been wolves, there is always conflict with humans in some way, shape, or form (typically livestock and pets). I remember as kid in Alaska my dad shooting wolves that were attacking our dog in our driveway. It happened more than once. Wolves are a different critter. They don’t give a fart about humans until they’ve been hunted a bit and learn to avoid humans. If they’re introduced to Colorado I’m sure they won’t be hunted for a long time. It took 25 years here in Idaho to get the hunting season really going. I’m sure it’ll be longer in Colorado which will result in conflicts in the areas mentioned in this thread. Hope this information helps.
