MR Bino Harness Magnet vs Compass?

I'm trying to pick a harness and it's of course harder than it sounds. I've struck out on finding the one that I've invented in my head, and am now playing lesser of two evils roulette.

Anyways, when my google-fu let me down I called Mystery Ranch to ask about their magnetic clasp's field strength and whether it would interfere with a compass. Unfortunately I still know exactly as much as I did before the search began.

Anyone tried it or mind digging their gear out and giving it a go?

I don't have a magnetic bino harness (for this vary reason) but I will say yes, it could.

Edit, better source.

Safe distances for compass calibration
  • 6” (15 cm) minimum: Metal rim glasses, pen/pencil, metal watch band, pocket knife, metal zipper/buttons, belt buckle, batteries, binoculars, cell phone, keys, camera, camcorder, survey nails, metal tape measure.
  • 18” (50 cm) minimum: Clipboard, data collector, computer, GPS antenna, 2-way radio, hand gun, hatchet, cell phone case with magnetic closure.
  • 6 ft (2 m) minimum: Bicycle, fire hydrant, road signs, sewer cap or drain, steel pole, ATV, guy wire, magnets, chain-link fence, bar-wire fence, data collectors
that use a magnet to hold the stylus.
  • 15 ft (5 m) minimum: Electrical box, small car/truck, powerline, building with concrete & steel.
  • 30 ft (10 m) minimum: Large truck, metal building, heavy machinery.

Interesting stuff there. Do you think the mentioned distances are exaggerated, being calibration standoff distances vs. "atta-way" accuracy?

I dont want straight enough to notice half a degree, for the handheld uses, but if its throwing a field that wide it could definitely be an issue.

Also a bit concerned that it may damage the needle since I'd like to throw it in the punch itself to keep it handy.

Guess I'll pass on that for now... now to find a harness that dumps open away from you instead of a flip top lid...

I have a Horn Hunter bino harness and love the fit and comfort but it messed with the compass on my GPS. I could hold it at arms length away and reset it but as soon as I brought it clos enough to read, it started turning. I avoid anything with magnets now.

I imagine many use GPS instead... but wouldntchathink the compass thing would have crossed someone's mind during design? Guess someone could have considered it and proceeded anyways, but that makes even less sense to me and my little brain.

Know anyone making one that dumps forward like a mail drop door? Might be some hangup there but seems like it has potential.
