Moving from CO to Austin, TX

Op,

Do you have to commute to downtown for work? Austin traffic can be pretty intense. Some decent communities in all directions, but generally west is going to be more expensive than north.

There’s ample public hunting opportunity within 3 hours town that you can hunt every year. Some good fishing opportunities near by, be it shallow water river fly fishing or traditional bass fishing or everything the coast has to offer.

I’d rather live in Austin vs Houston, so it could definitely be worse. That being said, Austin is grown exponentially population wise and the rest of the infrastructure not as much.

Thanks for the info. That’s good to know. I will be commuting 5 days a week into The Domain. So luckily I won’t have to go as far south as others may.

@Fever Buck curious what you do for a living? I will say that the economy in Colorado is shifting so maybe it will be what you need in a few years.
I’m an electrical engineer for a big tech company. Unfortunately it seems that most of the companies I know of are pulling folks out of Denver and or abandoning expansion plans in the state. The only one I knew of just laid me off so that’s what triggered the move. Would have loved to stay, but for now it’s not in the cards.

Yeah, you’re probably right. I was gonna say tech seems to be leaving the state and financial companies are moving in.

Not a Texas resident, but spend 4-5 months of the year around Austin for work. My folks like about an hour outside out Austin, the hunting and fishing from what I can tell is what you make of it. I’m fortunate to be able to hunt some family property, but I can understand the expense of leases being unattractive. Plenty of lakes and if you’re into large mouth fishing Texas is one of the best states. The golfing in and around Austin is some of the best in my opinion. The weather sucks in the summer, but being able to play golf in December sure is nice. Depending on where you’re looking the housing market isn’t terrible from what I’ve seen if you’re okay with commuting a bit, best of luck on the move, every place has its pros and cons it’s what you make of it at the end of the day.

Austin may be where you gotta work but nothing says you gotta play there. 3 hours to the coast and your also
on the edge of the Hill Country. Like has been said, the lease game is what you make of it. Find a good year round lease in some of that country and you’ll find deer, turkey, hogs and free range exotics. Aoudad, Axis, Blackbuck etc. Sometimes it’s a surprise what shows up.

I work at Domain, check out Austin Archery Club it’s about 15 min away.

Awesome, was just looking to see if there were any good archery ranges round. How are the crowds on the weekends?
PM when you get to town. I have a buddy who runs an archery shop and a private club. He has monthly shoots. I’ll connect you two. Also, look for archery hunting hogs at Granger Lake. This is ACOE property about an hour from the Domain.

There is a lot to do outdoors here. Just need to look for it since most land is private.

I moved down here three months ago from Dallas, have only made it out there once and had the 3D course to myself on a Saturday morning but it was the same weekend TAC was in San Antonio so not sure if that’s the norm.

The Texas hill country is a pretty unique area. I've hunted axis down there a couple times and it's a really fun hunt. Obviously it's not going to be as cool as hunting out west but it is what you make of it. I've had opportunities with work to move down that way but we've decided to stay in Oklahoma for now. I've always wanted to move to the mountains rather then Texas.

That makes sense. Probably not a ton of difference between Oklahoma and Texas. I had hoped to move to Idaho before getting laid off. Things change quick sometimes.

Good thing about Austin area is that there are some good schools if you look around, no state income tax, lot of good restaurants. Bad part would be traffic, most liberal part of Texas, the longhorns and the heat.

You could line up a lot of different hunts down there within a fairly short drive, Nilgai, axis, auodad, blackbuck, whitetail, hog.

Hope it works out for you and maybe you'll find something out west again soon.

Any idea why? Wife works for big tech in northern colorado.
I think it’s mostly a reflection of both of the industries. Tech has been unstable in the last few years. Whenever the economy turns down the financial industry gets busy because people are more concerned about their money. Right now, Colorado has a lot of people heading into retirement and a lot of older millennials who are getting to the point of needing to take their investments more seriously. And I can’t put my finger on it but 10-15 years ago Colorado was willing to attract any business (except firearm related). Lately it’s almost like they’re limiting economic growth by not competing with other regions to get businesses to move in.

Thanks man. Appreciate the positive outlook.

Austin can be great. Went to college there, lived there with my wife for many years. Just sold our house in SW Austin to a couple moving from Boulder, I think... We now live in Wheat Ridge, CO.

There is some awesome public duck hunting I miss. Great bass fishing everywhere. Beautiful scenery West of you. Good hooved hunting opportunities if you pay to play or know people.

The heat is oppressive! The crowds surrounding any of the festivals are terrible, but the experience can be fun. The food is amazing, so many good places.
