I have an old friend who wants to try backcountry mountain hunting this year. Becuase we go back a long way, I said I would take him out for 3 nights & 4 days to the Rockies where I hunt. I bascially have double of everything you would need to go out, so all he has to bring is food, under wear, socks, the clothing on his back and boots. I am even lending him a rifle I know is capable and reliable and rain gear etc...

Now I spend top $ on my boots. I have worn Kenetreks and currently wear Cabela’s Meindl Alaskan Hunter (all boots in the $390+ range). I know what to look for and where to look for top end boots but I have no idea of whats out their for the budget minded. I told him he needs to get good boots if nothing else. He has limited funds, he just bought a new house and has a young baby with another on the way. Worest of all he lives 1000 miles away 2 provinces over so I can't just go out "shoe shopping with him" (lol never thought I would say that line!)

What is the best boot he can buy for the mountains under $200.00?

Any help or recomendations are greatly appreciated.

I don't know if STP translates across the border but they have some pretty good boot deals if you have a good discount code. I could get some Asolo Sasalongs for about $140 today and a half dozen other high quality boots for under $200. If you need a code just join their email list or post here. Over a two week period I get offers between 30% to 45% off with 99 cent shipping. The best boots usually don't get more than 35% off.

i dont think you can get into a mountain hunting boot for $200 but should be able to get into a backpacking boot that will at least fit and be waterproof. something in the 6" and 3/4 shank. asolo sassalong or fugitive. soloman quest. vasque breeze or wasatch. zamberlan etc

You could look at the Salomon Quest gtx boots. Not a full on hunting boot but a great supportive hiking boot.

If he wears size 12.5 uk I can hook him up with some Hanwag Yukons new for $165 us. I bought two pair but they are 1/2 size too big now that I have 200+ miles on the first pair. 12.5 uk is about a 13.5 us size.

Buy from sierra trading post. You can get a pair of $350 boots for under 200.

My buddy got his asolo sassalongs for 130 off there. And those are the same caliber as kennetrek, meindl and all those other European brand boots

Wow! Thanks for All the quick responses! I have no idea what size a boot he wears. I Will have to ask him. All I know is that he is about 5'9" and around 180 so I doubt He is a size 12 daveinjax but thansks for the kind offer.

I guess the best thing would be for him to go into a store and try on differen sizes to see where he lands for boot size?

Im doing the same thing now Manosteel. I am going with the Irish Setter Trailblazers. These are a rugged 7inch high boot with full grain leather and waterproof gortex. These are uninstallated though but are pretty warm. They run 176 at Red Wing shoes or online they can be had for 140. You wont find a tougher boot in this price point. The Soles on these boots are like Tires very sturdy. heavy duty waterproof and extremely tough pair of boots. The model number is the 878 Trailblazer. IS also makes a boot called the Elk hunter that sells for 260 but in a 10 inch model. These are the 7 inch. These feel like butter on my feet and very little break in time on the trailblazer. They have the stiff shank for the ankle support and very solid base for those hill climbs. I am in Colorado btw so Im in the same type of country. The reviews are top notch on these boots. Here is a link for you to check them out.

Thanks for the links. They look like what he needs and can afford. I might even pick up a pair for my son.

IF he has med to narrow feet - definitely check out the Sassalongs on STP. Can be had for less than $150 if you have the right coupon codes.

I have a set and they are great.

I just bought some new Danner Full Curls at Scheels on sale for $119, regular price is $240 on them... Really nice boots with good support and seamless construction.
