Who determines what I need?

You with the commies? Maybe no one needs powder?

I use Reloader 7, Reloader 17, Reloader 19 and Reloader 22 most of the time.

Was at a gun shop today and they had an 8lb of 4451 for $200. Only thing I have that it shows it will work for is the .270 win and I dont shoot it enough for 8lbs. Was hoping the .308 or the 300RUM had a load for it, but wasnt the case

This is why threads like this rock. I went to JUCO in KS and depending on where you saw this, could get it bought. I would LOVE to consolidate what I have in powder to just 2 or 3 types, but I picked a bad time to get into reloading, and have to take what I can find at the moment. Without people sharing what they are finding and working to help each other out, folks will get stuck using stuff they aren't in love with.

Varget, H4350, H1000, H4895 are all pretty popular in various shooting competitions with Varget being at the top imo. Reloder 16 is sought after too.

That said, Alliant, Vit, and Accurate have very suitable alternatives to Hodgdon powders but they aren't as well known and tested.

Look up the IMR powder burn rate chart, anything from about LT32 and IMR4198 to Retumbo and H1000 are in demand for cartridges today.

Oh, RL23 and RL26 are really hot now too.

How long does powder stay good for if kept in its jug in a good ammo can?

Any way to test other than loading?

I opened my cans yesterday that I put all my primers/powders in a few years ago and I have 9 unopened pound jugs and 1/2 of an opened 8# military powder. smp something....I was loading for carbine classes and then ammo became more available so I packed the stuff I had up. Been thinking of setting everything back up....it was in very good large ammo cans in a dry environment. I remember packing up enough stuff to reload 4k rounds of .223.

Many years if stored in a moisture free environment.

I'd look for various burn rates; H335, R15/Varget, H4350, H4831sc, H1000 should cover just about every rifle cartridge
