My son and I will be in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness for the first 10 days of archery elk. I had planned on bringing a floor less shelter but based upon what I have read it sounds like it is wetter than normal and am wondering about mosquitos’? Should I go floorless or bring something with a floor?

I have ran plenty of both florless and floored. I prefer floorless, but I always run at least a partial floor in my floorless as I prefer to keep my gear clean and dry. As far a mosquito's goes, nets do not help when it comes to entry and exit. The only thing that helps is not leaving the shelter open. As far as my advice goes, use what is most comfortable to you both, as comfort goes a long way, and leaves you much more refreshed and ready to hunt.

I've burned something like this in my floorless and it works good.
I just burn it for a few minutes before going to bed.

Here is the result of trying a one hour nap in the zirkles last weekend.

Bring a shelter with a floor and net.

Mosquitos are always the worst in July in the high country; however in over 25 years of hunting northern CO I have never had to break out the bug spray during archery elk season, even during wet years like this one. There may be some hanging around into the second or third week of August but they are even pretty much done by then. We do an annual back country trek in early August and the bugs are pretty well thinned out. You may experience flies and an occasional yellow jacket or hornet during warmer days in September.

This is great information for me! I plan to be between 8-10k elevation. So I should be fine then?

I agree with Dennis they are generally pretty tamed down by late-August. July really is the worst. You can still find pockets near swampy areas in September but it's not like now where you just can't get away from them. I have yet to wish I had mosquito protection once the season starts.
