The CPW has identified several units in the SW part of the state that will most likely become limited next year or in 2020. From who I talk with this change at this point is almost a sure thing = just waiting for the vote of the commissioners to approve the change.

Needless to say for most this will be a very good change that is much needed in this part of the state. The units that the cpw are looking at totally limit archery elk licensing are units 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, 711, 741, 751, & 771. It looks like the changes will apply to units 44, 45, 47, & 444 as well.

The change will be voted on at the next CPW commissioners meeting on Jan 15-16 so make sure and let the commissioners know (via email) that this change is a good idea for both hunters and the resource.

Great to see as something has to be done to protect the experience.

How much of an impact do y'all think this will have on other OTC units? I definitely agree with moving away from straight OTC, but at some point it seems it all needs to change in one way or another.

There will still be plenty of opportunity in other OTC units as there are still a ton of them. Allocation is also believed to be very high so drawing the above units will be easy or there will be leftover tags. Many guys including myself choose to hunt a 1 point unit every other year as the quality and experience is just that much better than OTC I imagine a ton of folks will take that line.

This is also just the first small step and other units will follow. I loved the good old days of OTC archery but I agree that it is good to see the CPW out in front of this one and make a change that will be positive for most hunters as well as the resource we all love to chase.

Also rifle will not be limited and some archers complain about this but I dont see the 2 connected as it will be nice to be able to fill the freezer with a otc bull on years you dont draw archery.

So.....16 more Units you CAN’T go hunting on without the states permission if it passes.

another sad day for the people who have grown up outdoors hunting and fishing and truly love being out there

Its gonna pile people on top of people in the rest of the otc units until this “ lets go hunting because it’s cool” fad finally comes to an end.

RAISE THE PRICE OF LICENSE AND TAG TO $1000 FOR ALL RESIDENTS AND NON RESIDENTS

THAT WILL THIN EM OUT....

This Doesn’t effect fishing in any way.

If you love being out there, you can still be out there. You’ll just have to draw a tag. Not unique for western hunting in anyway.

My guess is that while there will be some increased crowds in other units, many thousands of hunters have been coming to the same SW units for years, even decades and they will either drop out of elk hunting in CO all together or only go when they draw tags in the units which they have history.

Anyone who has hunted the SW units for more than a couple of seasons will likley agree that the health of their herd is not in good shape and possibly borderline dire. Even if you have relies on that OTC tag for years, a responsible hunter with the ability to perceive the situation beyond their own selfish desires for OTC tags will view this as a necessary move.

You could probably raise the NR tag cost to $1000 and stay flat on revenue, but I don’t think that’s in the interest of the “people who love to hunt and fish.” You’re proposal is to make it more exclusive by raising the cost Vs. Reducing the number of available tags. How is that in the interest of hunters? Either option results in a reduction and will exclude a number of hunters, but one option is more affordable and keeps an out of state elk hunt possible ~$1000 (tag + travel) for many thousands of people. That + a sustainable herd is in the best interest of hunters and elk.

I don’t see it on the January docket.

Thanks for the info!
I agree it's time and for the better... even though It includes my primary unit.
What I don't understand, why limit archery but still allow unlimited OTC rifle? Gun seasons are what manage the herd numbers, not archery. If herds are down, unlimited OTC rifle makes no sense (except financially)

Are there CO archery draw units that still allow OTC 3rd and 4th rifle? I would assume that status changes as it’s no longer an “OTC” unit, but perhaps I am incorrect. I never paid too much attention to late seasons until this year.

54 and 55 went to draw for archery a few years ago, yet the 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons are still OTC. From my understanding, that's what the intention is here as well. That makes absolutely no sense at all to limit only archery hunters and leave the units wide open to unlimited rifle hunters.

If there's a need to make those units limited draw, then the only thing that makes sense to is to limit ALL tags, not just archery which has the least amount of impact. This smells like a single-minded lobby.........but which one?

I agree with the overall route at reducing/limiting tags in these units and I also agree with you that if they are going to change archery status, then It should also apply to 3rd and 4th rifle seasons.
