Moose Hunt Help

Ok so before I get bashed for “not doing my research” I have to make an honest statement. I am slammed with work, kids, activities household stuff ect and I’m having trouble dialing where to look for the right hunt. I don’t have 20k to book a hunt and I want to go with a friend and my dad as well and I know they don’t have that kinda cash. So what I am looking for is a good direction and any helpful information you can give. My budget is under $10k. If I need to plan this out two years or three years in advance that is fine but I’d prefer to go sooner rather than later because my dad is not getting younger. The real goal is to be able to go have a great unique experience and get opportunities for shots at Moose. If I’m leaving anything out please let me know and thanks in advance for any insight.

There’s moose in Alaska and parts of Canada. That’s probably a good place to start looking.

Too funny. Yes I understand there is Moose in Alaska and Canada. And I think from what I have seen in posts already is that Alaska, and the Yukon area in general is pretty pricey. So where would the best bang for your buck opportunity be to harvest a mature bull moose for under 10k a person? Should I focus on Newfoundland area? Just looking for advice to anyone who is willing to give some to save me time calling a thousand outfitters across Alaska and Canada

Check out public use cabins, very cheap, typically way off grid. I killed a moose in Alaska this year and I didn’t spend $3k as a NR. But yes, I see lots of research in your future

Best bang for your buck, especially since there are three of you, would be Newfoundland. You won't shoot huge moose but there's a chance all three will get one.

I went to nf. Last year had a great time and great experience seen some awesome country and killed a moose. I like traveling and experience. Next year I'm going to hunt moose in ak. For another experience. Cost is double +. But chance at a bigger moose. Lots of good options in Canada

I PM'd you about some Canadian moose hunts I've come across that appeared to be relatively easy on the pocket book. Is that all what you're looking for? Or are you wanting to go big for an Alaskan/Yukon Giant?

Thanks for all the help guys. I just needed a push in a direction. It’s obviously Newfoundland and the more I read about it the more it seems like a perfect fit. I called Hideaway Lodge today and they were very reasonable on price and it sounds like we would have a lot of good opportunities. One thing I’m still looking into is cost of getting the meat home…

From what I've seen best and cheapest way to get meat home is to drive their.with freezer or coolers .

If you can take Alaska airlines that will help, I became a known shipper through them now I can cargo ship. Cost me $585 to ship 515lbs of moose. Make sure you have an extra day or two to pack up your moose and get it shipped if you’re going that route. Takes a lot of time to get that done. But if you’re going through an outfitter I’m sure they will be a huge help in this area

I hunted moose in Newfoundland this year. Had a great time - harvested a bull moose. There was two out of a party of six that did not fill tags, but they did pass on some very small moose early in the hunt. You can add a bear to the hunt for a small up charge (I also harvested a black bear). Grand total was just around 10K.
Now I am looking for a DIY type hunt in Alaska for a larger moose. Very interested to learn more about the public use cabins mentioned above. If anyone can offer some information around that, I would appreciate any information.

Where are you located?
If you are in the west look into a guided hunt in Alberta. You'll need to bump your budget up by just a few thousand, but the drive will be shorter and trophy potential will probably be better than NF.

I've done the 40-50 hour round trip drive in the past from Ohio, headed west. It's a long time, but it's doable. And gonna be the cheapest way to get all your meat home.

I've looked at Alberta and they seem to have a sweet spot for pretty good sized moose (not yukon or alaska, but still) and price/wilderness.

It is hard to beat Newfoundland price wise, you will be guided as a non resident but is still allot cheaper than an Alaska diy hunt usually. I have been doing both the last 12 years so I know the differences.

If you go this route just be aware the Newfoundland moose are smaller in size and almost always rack size also but if your not a trophy hunter great opportunity.

I can do 2-3 Newfie moose hunts for one Alaska diy hunt all said and done.

Newfoundland. Go to the Harrisburg Sport show this winter and book a hunt before it's too late and the decimate their moose population like Ontario did....

If you are short on time , I would have to agree that you should look to Newfoundland for something under 10K. Planning something for AK takes time and a lot of research like PAhunter has stated. Gearing up properly for AK will take a nice chunk of your budget. If your only going to do this once it's not money well spent.
