After meeting my hunter in Whitehorse we drove 3 hours to Kluane Lake. From their we were flown into a small remote lake.
We set up a camp consisting of 2 small 3 person tents for sleeping and a large 8 man bomb shelter for a kitchen. We headed out the next morning in a 14ft aluminum with a 6 horse kicker. The first few days were quite eventful with us doing some successful stalks through the timber and getting close to several bulls that just werent big enough. One morning on the way down the lake
to a vantage spot we came across 4 bull 20 yds off the lake standing in the wide open muskeg. The biggest bull had 6 on each front, unfortunately the palms were short and narrow. I had a hard time deciding on wether he should shoot it or not. It was early in the hunt so we passed on the opportunity. For the next 4 days I we wondered if it was the right decision.I told my hunter Keith Sept. 8th would be his lucky day as it was my sons birthday. That morning we got up to one of the lookouts and in no time located what looked to be a good bull. We did a stalk almost exactly as we had on a bull a few days previous and in the same location. As hunting goes the bull was suddenly 40 yds in front of us through the sparse timber.
I was grunting and raking on the way towards him but he had gone silent the last couple hundred yards and snuck in on us quicker than expected. 1 look at the palms and I was giving Keith the go ahead. A few shots later it was a done deal.
When we walked up to the moose we knew why we passed on the others. Biggest 59 inch moose i ever guide, should make book. Keith is the Type of hunter who enjoys everything about the hunt and was a pleasure to guide.
My 2nd hunter was 76, came for 3 days mostly to hang out with his buddy who was also hunting in the camp, turned down a 55 inch bull the 1st day as he wanted 60 or better. I watched his buddy shoot a 60 inch bull the next day.
3rd hunt and flown in once again to another remote lake. Due to weather delays arrive 1 hr before dark in a snowstorm and set up camp.Next morning take boat down lake…spot big bull on side hill. Once again sneaking up on a bull it appears from nowhere and no chance for a shot as it runs away.As the bull is going through an opening 300yds away I cow call and it stops. Tim sets up for a shot but cant get a good rest adjust to a new tree and…338 Lapua barks. spine shot moose drops on the spot.
When we walked up to Tims 63 inch moose I congratulated him on a great shot and apologized for his hunt being done so soon.
He didnt even get to hunt for an hour.
