I have a few questions that I was hoping someone on here would maybe know an answer to, I have emailed Montana fish and game , and have called several times with no clear answer.

My son is 9, will be 10 in a few months. I am trying to put him in to the Montana draw with no luck. The state website says that anyone 10 and older can hunt for two years as an apprentice, before they are required to get hunters safety. However my son already has his hunters safety.

I made him a hunters profile on Montana’s website and can not put in for any hunting licenses for him. I am guessing that he would need to be an apprentice hunter for 2 years? How would that work? If I draw do I then have to apply for an apprentice tag for him? Really confused on how this all works, and Montana has not been any help so far. Any advice would be great

He's not eligible for the draw as an apprentice. And although he's taken hunter safety, MT is 12 years old to "hunt" as an individual.

Hopefully that answers your question....to your point, I'm not really understanding how a non-res apprentice could get a big game tag at all since they'd have to draw.....? Perhaps the language on the site is to include all upland, waterfowl, etc.

Made a bunch of phone calls today. Finally got someone that knew what was going on. Youth tag is directly tied to parents tag. So if adult draws then youth draws. So resident youth are guaranteed a deer tag, non resident have same odds as parent.

And yes even though your son has his hunter education in another state you still need to do an apprentice/mentor with him until 12. Super easy to do, you just print the form off the website.

I’ve done it with 2 of my boys (although we are residents).

Youth hunters age 10 and 11 MUST HUNT ON THE APPRENTICE PROGRAM. Youth hunters hunting on the Apprentice program are not eligible for ANY limited draw hunting license including NR Youth combo tags. All apprentice hunters are limited to OTC tags. If your child was 12, it would be different but at the age they are at, they are required to follow the rules for the apprentice hunter program which includes hunting OTC tags for deer and birds.

Pretty sure this is incorrect. Kids can't draw anything. Wouldn't be the first time the admin staff gave bad advice.

10 and 11 no matter of residency need to hunt an OTC tag. At least that's my experience and what I believe the regulations say.

Well if that's true these regulations are not correct. All of the NR licenses are limited draw.
No idea. I've raised a couple thru the ranks of apprentice as a resident. Wouldn't be the first time fish and duck had some trouble with their regulations making sense....
