I was out in central MT this weekend. Was planning for a 5-day hunt but all the rain pushed me off the mountain the end of day 3. The weather did clear up for 1 day and the bulls were bugling like crazy! I'll be back at it this weekend up in NW MT where I live, then heading down for a 10-day elk camp with some buddies the last week of September.

No elk hunting in the Breaks for me, but I have been in there during a rain and stayed with some folks from Brusette in the spring. You get taller and your feet get heavier as you hike.

I've hunted the breaks during rain one time. That was enough for me!

I can’t wait... my hunt starts Monday evening. Just in time for the weather to cool off, the moon to start waning, and the rut to kick into high gear!!!

I leave a week from tomorrow for 9 days. Never been able to have a hunt that long. I hope the hunt goes in my favor.

Yeah the weather looked pretty wet last week but that gets me excited that they were bugling! Looking forward to the experience. My hunt starts Sunday morning!

So I was back at it this weekend in Central MT. Weather was amazing but elk were totally silent. There were a TON of camps in the area though so it could have been due to the pressure. We were into fresh elk sign Saturday and Sunday and we actually called a 4x4 into 40 yards yesterday morning. I tried to thread one through what I thought was a clearing but I ended up hitting a branch and my arrow went right over his back. Elk camp starts next Friday in SW MT so hopefully we can put some elk in the coolers before the month is over.

Two weeks ago on opening weekend. Ran into 60 head in the Madison Range while out dirtbiking. The herd bull was in screaming match with a satellite bull. Weather that day was raining and 45 degrees. However the past 5 days it’s been 80-90 degrees so there’s a good possibility everyone(elk) having a lazy day hiding and chilling to beat the heat.
