I guess I should have been more specific. I understand the regulations part, but was wondering if they were tracking the population of 3 point mule deer? They came out with the tag last year so I figured there must be a number of them hanging around. I just haven't been able to find harvest info for the 3 point specifically.

Probably more of a management stand point hoping to get some of the lesser bucks out that guys don’t wanna kill after burning a lifetime of points

The tag was proposed as a way to monitor for CWD. That is why there is a "Mandatory Check" associated with it. As far as management goes it's a bit of a stretch but that's another topic. The quality of deer has been slipping in 270 and "selectively harvesting" some young bucks in the unit is probably not the answer if FWP is trying to bring the unit back to what it used to be.

Montana fwp doesnt know how to manage anything the current state of our elk & deer herds here ,along with the screwed up draw bulls for billionaires program & a host of other issues proves that. so yes it wouldnt surprise me if this wa a mansgement stragaty that HANK came up with

Yes. My wife had this tag two years ago and we spoke with the biologist quite a bit on this subject. There are a good number of mature 3x3 and 3x4s in the unit that most hunters don't want to use their tag of a lifetime on, so they came up with the new 270-51 tag.

MFWP doesn't post point data per species specific. You can contact the Helena office and speak to their statistics specialist. It use to be Neil but he retired and I'm not sure who is in charge of draw statistics or population statistics since I last worked for them. Try calling the Wildlife Division in Region 2 and ask about that specific hunt district or the Helena office. Hope that helps.

I hunt 270 often for elk over the past 20 years (still collecting points for the 270 buck tag). There are a lot of bucks at various age classes, including a lots of 3-pt bucks. IMO, this unit does not hold the number of trophy bucks it used to be known for. I see a few 150-170 inch bucks but have not seen a 180-200 inch deer in the past 3-4 years. Not sure if this is due to poor management by MTFWP or a normal population age cycle.

There are still big bucks there. But not as big as in the early to mid 2000s. We used to watch monster non typicals chasing does. Deer well over 200 inches. Not anymore.
