I have a classic model 70 30-06 that I am looking at rebarreling. Would it be plausible to convert it to 6.5 creedmoor? I know I could just buy another gun, but I like this model 70. The current barrel is a poor performer.
Thanks

Make it a 6.5-06. Easy and more betterer.

Yes it is possible.

This is a PF M70 long action in 243 win-

When I put together my adult daughter's rifle I sent a M70 06' SS classic to pacnor, they copied the factory contour, cut it to 22" and did the chamber (6.5CM) work. I then dropped it in a MCM edge....It turned out great, I'd do it again.

How hard was this to do? Did you have to change the bolt stop or does using a dbm make it an easy change over?

That rifle uses a CDI long action to short action AICS bottom metal- so no mods last that were needed. No mods to the bolt stop either.

I did end up rebarreling this 30-06 to 7-08. And, it does not feed the cartridges on the left hand side of the magazine well. The rear of the cases slide under the bolt when it is brought forward. If I move the cartridges forward in the magazine it works better. Any thoughts on a fix? Worst case scenario I just rechamber it to 280ai.

Put a spacer in the back of the mag well, grab a shorter magazine follower?
280ai wouldn’t be a bad compromise though
Talk to whoever spun a new barrel on for ya and see what they can come up with

Modifying the magazine with a block can work if it’s done right with attention to proper follower/follower spring function.

You could avoid a spacer block and change to a center feed magazine, but that requires an internal magazine to be loaded from the floor plate, or the expense of converting to detachable mag bottom metal.

I shoot short cartridges in a long Remington and I was warned by a few gunsmiths sticking with double stack internal magazines is asking for frustration, and they are right about that.

Any ideas on where I can find a spacer for the magazine? I’m wondering if I need to just buy a magazine and remove the spacer from it but would prefer to skip that step if possible. I can’t seem to find spacers on Midwest gunworks

They might exist, but the only spacers I’ve ever seen other than the spot welded factory spacer in 06 and 7 mag length magazines were fabricated. Fabricated spacers have been solid steel, solid aluminum, solid plastic, welded shapes.

Sometimes a custom gun with a modified magazine pops up in a forum or magazine article, but nothing comes to mind for a model 70 with factory magazine. Someone has done what you’ve done with a Winchester. Maybe the Winchester collectors forum has someone that’s already figured it out.

Form, CDI appears to be out of business. Are there any other options for long action to short action AICS bottom metals?

With longer higher BC ammo my vote is to not use a spacer. A few of mine that ive swapped from 300win down to 6.5 Creed ive not had any issues (non model 70s)
