I am thinking of getting a new shelter for solo hunts and maybe hunts with my wife. Right now I think the Duomid checks all the boxes and is not crazy expensive for a DCF shelter. I have a question for those of you with one.

When its just me can I set up my sleeping pad/bag or maybe a solo inner to the back giving me enough room in front to get in and remove wet/muddy clothing without getting it all over my bag?

I don't want to go too big for the sake of keeping the footprint small enough to find places to pitch it easier. I think the Duomid appears to have just enough space with decent headroom.

Not to confuse things for you, and the DuoMid is a very nice well made shelter, but if you haven’t looked already you might want to look at the Locus Gear Hapi. It’s also very well made, comparable in size to the Duo, I think it’s comparable in price, lighter than the Duo, and the door configuration allows for two people to come and go without having to climb over each other.

There was one listed in the classifieds here recently, not sure if it is still available....maybe search. I think it was around $250 with the solo inner.

I have looked at that. Not crazy about the color or ordering something from overseas in case of warranty work or repairs. I may reconsider.

They do come in two different colors (red and black), although my "red" one looks more like pink to me. I can't speak for the warranty, but I was a little apprehensive about ordering something from Japan. Anyway, the whole transaction process went well, and the shelter is very precisely and cleanly constructed.

I got a DCF duomid about a week ago so haven't had a chance to use it yet. I got it as a solo shelter and will use the solo inner or bivy in the back half and use the half by the door as a vestibule like you mentioned. There are a number of youtube videos and posts on backpackinglight showing them setup in this manner that would help you get a feel for space. The supermid or Stratospire 2 will get used instead of the duomid if I have another person with.

Pricing between MLD and Locus is kind of funny. The DCF duomid ($440) is notably cheaper than the DCF Hapi, ($615) yet the Supermid ($820) is more expensive than the comparably sized Khafra ($750). Locus shelters are bit lighter and I like the looks of that black DCF option! My Duomid came to 15.0 ounces in the stuff sack prior to tying guylines on it.

As far as doors on the short/long side of the 2 man mids - my thought is that door on short side (Hapi, Ultamid 2) is preferable for 2 people to avoid climbing over each other. Solo, I like the idea of having the sleeping area in the back (Duomid, Khufu) and a little more protected from rain with the door open.

Also - MLD may be in the states but you're going to wait a while for a shelter. My Supermid took 13 weeks but was a custom order with a stove jack and seam sealing. DCF Duomid took about 6 weeks.

They pop up somewhat frequently on backpacking light classifieds though.

That’s interesting, I can’t remember exactly what I paid for mine but I think it was right around $525. I wonder if they’ve just gone up in price or if the exchange rate has changed and the US dollar is not as strong against the yen, as maybe it was several years ago when I made the purchase.

I think it is maybe a bit of both (exchange rate and price change). I know when I first started looking at them they were pretty close to each other. Makes me wonder if there is something different about how locus and MLD makeup their panels and the inherent material waste that makes the DCF duomid so much cheaper than everything else but especially the duomid XL and supermid.

After looking at some more pictures and video I think the Duomid may be tight for 2 people and gear. While it would be mostly for myself my wife would be in it on occasion and she likes a nest inside. That doesn’t leave much room for a couple packs and boots.

The Duo is a basically the same size as a SO Silvertip without the two and a half feet on each long side (towards the door) that you can stuff gear into or cook. Very doable for two if you like each other.
