Mirage and wind calls

Say I have a target at 700 yards. Looking through the spotter I see mirage moving left to right.

Where in that 700 yard range is it?

Most likely every where between you and the target, it shows up best in a spotter if you focus a bit short of the target

Okay, that makes sense.

I seem to remember shooting where the wind was right to left where I was and
vice versa in the mirage.

That doesn't sound very far-fetched. Winds swirl like water in a river. They "say" wind at the shooter matters most because that small angle change early results in big changes downrange, but the bullet spends more time in the downrange wind than it does at the shooter, so it all kind adds up.

BCDJR is correct to consider the wind where the bullet will be (which isn't always 3 feet off the ground). However, at 1,000 yards you're probably only sending that bullet 10 feet above line of sight. All of this goes out the window if you shoot across a canyon/valley. I have no words of wisdom for that scenario.

Also place the target in the lower 1/3 of spotting scope. That way you can read above the target. The desired wind mirage reading could be 8-12 ft above the target at 1000 yards depending on your load. Usually as stated above a slight turn to get scope out of focus will help you see it.
