The couple years they had a season in MN they were killing 200+ and absolutely zero change in population estimates. They could easily kill 400 or so and still not see a negative trend with the overall population. At the same time they have zero idea how many wolves there actually are.I really would like to see a wolf hunting and trapping season open here in Minnesota, but I don't things are gonna change for a while. They are by no means an "endangered " or "threatened " species . I believe numbers are significantly higher than reported and some could easily be harvested without detriment to the population as a whole. Imo
That's pretty neat! Also kind of depressing. I don't know much about deer/small game pops in the NE corner but I'm guessing they gotta be down.
Exactly. Right before they had a wolf season I spoke to a CO who shared with me how frequently they were paying government trappers to come in and clean up depredation situations on various ranches. Seems kinda intellectually challenged to pay that kinda of money OUT and on the flip side have hunters/ trappers willing to pay IN to harvest these animals with the same net removal from the population. Would be a win/win situation . Guess that's why their referred to as "Government Dogs". Everyone has their opinions on wolves. I personally would like to see them managed as a predator not necessarily kill every last one . Ranchers may have a different opinion.from the 2022 wolf management plan update:
