That is pretty cool. Link to the whole study anywhere? Looks like it may be from socials.

Kind of interesting how the outer packs appear to do a little exploring while yellow and green are boxed in like sardines.

In other news, water is wet. Anyone who has been around wolves knows how territorial they are. They protect their borders... if only we did the same.

Single wolves will range far outside their normal range but eventually return if not shot or hit by vehicle.
where I live they claim no wolves until @89-98 but it not accurate.
saw my first wolf in 75 when I was a kid and it had been shot and had a radio collar. The attitude of shoot wolves continues strong here unfortunately. The Native American population is the opposite. Most reservations here it is illegal to shoot wolves period. Many wolves are shot in deer season illegally I suspect as they make hunting deer more difficult but not impossible by any means.
I am not anti wolf.

I really would like to see a wolf hunting and trapping season open here in Minnesota, but I don't things are gonna change for a while. They are by no means an "endangered " or "threatened " species . I believe numbers are significantly higher than reported and some could easily be harvested without detriment to the population as a whole. Imo

That's pretty neat! Also kind of depressing. I don't know much about deer/small game pops in the NE corner but I'm guessing they gotta be down.

The couple years they had a season in MN they were killing 200+ and absolutely zero change in population estimates. They could easily kill 400 or so and still not see a negative trend with the overall population. At the same time they have zero idea how many wolves there actually are.

Exactly. Right before they had a wolf season I spoke to a CO who shared with me how frequently they were paying government trappers to come in and clean up depredation situations on various ranches. Most of management is based on political science vs biology

There was another study out on moose calve mortality and I believe wolves were pretty much the main culprits

65 % wolves , 16 % black bear, + other cause. ( we manage black bears) of moose calve mortality.

They need to do a wolf kill like WI. We are over by Alexandria and they are starting to make there way.

I've read articles about studies of packs in and around camp ripley . Imagine guys shooting, tanks and mortar practice and those animals roaming around that area. So yeah it doesn't surprise me they are to the west over by Alex.

The success rate is kind of BS beings this was a quota hunt and you had to monitor the daily harvest to see if the season was still open or not and there were a lot of anti-wolf hunting advocates that were successful drawing licenses.

Seems kinda intellectually challenged to pay that kinda of money OUT and on the flip side have hunters/ trappers willing to pay IN to harvest these animals with the same net removal from the population. Would be a win/win situation . Guess that's why their referred to as "Government Dogs". Everyone has their opinions on wolves. I personally would like to see them managed as a predator not necessarily kill every last one . Ranchers may have a different opinion.
