Hey guys, Looking to burn my points this year so I can start drawing lesser hunts. I currently have 13 200 series (elk) which should about get me about a 73% chance of drawing according to the Oregon tag percentages page. Lots of info on it over at Ifish but nothing about the success over the last couple years.

Does anyone over here know much about it and how it’s been the last couple years? Can’t scout it as the only way you can access the sub unit (legally) is with a USFS permit which is only granted with the tag.

Thanks.

There are Elk in there. But the numbers are diminishing like the rest of the blues. I have not seen the numbers that were around even just 10 years ago. Also if you are going to play in the watershed and want to make a hunt of it you better be in the best shape of your life. Because in there, there are two directions, Up and down.

That’s what I’ve been reading, the ridge I would like to hunt if I get drawn looks like the nastiest one in the whole unit.

I’ve never hunted it but live in the area. I hunt the Walla Walla. There are some big bulls in the water shed but as stated numbers are down. About half of what they were 20 years ago. My neighbor works for the Forest service, patrols the unit during hunting season. He says if you know what your doing and are fit you should get your bull. If you draw let me know, takes me 11/2 hours to drive around to the area most guys use to access, only 16 miles as the crow flys.

The road right behind these two is the watershed boundary. I think this bulls could just as easily been shot in the watershed. The trails go back and forth. These are from 2019.

Nice bulls! I’m from Tillamook, it’s about a 6+ hour drive from here. I will reach out if I draw the tag. Thanks!

It is a very difficult area to scout. The Forest circus is serious about not entering, that means you can’t step off the road onto the shoulder and glass. I danced around with one of the FS Cops for doing just that. Only reason I didn’t get a ticket was there was an old survey stake that showed I was standing in the right of way.
Ill be guiding in Alaska May thru September. If you draw I’ll put you in touch with my neighbor who patrols the area.

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

What part of Alaska do you guide in? Did a Kodiak island deer hunt last month. It was a lot of fun, some of the steepest country I have ever seen around Uganik.

Yes the watershed patrols get their panties in a bunch if they think you are going to stop your rig and pee off the side of the road. Watershed on one side wilderness on the other. Little men looking to make themselves look a lot bigger than they are. But on the other hand if you are a member of the umatillas you can go into the watershed for religious purposes and that is OK.

Does that offer apply to my son and I. We were Blessed to be drawn this year. We drew tags 17 yrs ago. Since then things have undoubtedly changed.
Thanks,

I drew a tag for the shed this year 2021 and would be curious if the offer for insight on the unit would be open if not I understand completely. Thanks
