I seen in Coleman's surplus catalog he has the US shelter halfs and polish poncho shelter half and was wondering witch one would be better or would have more room .could you buy a second set for either shelter and snap together for a bigger tent

Still have a couple shelter halves here too, and the poles/stakes. My first floorless shelter, long before the current popularity of floorless shelters.

I used it in the Marines, keep it for nostalgia. No way I'd carry it around with today's options.

Same here. Bought a couple of sets in a fit of nostalgia for boot camp. I haven't weighed it but with poles stakes and strings it is fairly obscenely heavy. I let the kids play with one set and used another as a ground cloth for one trip. Even then it was heavy.

I good synolon tarp or one of the pricier option is so much light. Throw in a pair of trekking poles and. A little 550 and you are gtg.

As far as snapping together goes, yes you can by several and make quite a large shelter in fact. But as stated, they are quite heavy. The idea being that several soldiers could get together and by snapping their respective ponchos (shelter half) together, they make a tent large enough to share, but individually are only carrying the one piece

You bet. A lightweight tarp, or something like the Mountain Shelter LT wouldn't be too expensive, and give the same shelter at about 1/10 the weight.

The only advantage to the shelter-half, it does breathe. I remember they were fairly good in the rain. Sort of wicked the water down the fabric, until you touch the inside, then it would start dripping through.

The good ol' days.....grin
