There’s 3 of us headed to Montana in September to chase elk. We are considering taking one tent for all of us to stay in. Right now it’s a toss up between a 6P and 8P tent. Which would be better choice? Really leaning towards the 6P but I have never used or seen one setup. Would like to think there would be plenty of room

i consider the 6 man a two person shelter.

but you can fit three in an emergency, just not comfortably.

get the 8. [or a 12 man] if you will always have 3 guys.

i have owned two 8 man tipis and sold both to get a 12 man.
my 6 man and 12 man were used most and the 8 man just fell in the cracks.

edit
build a mock up out of string around a pole. you will see how much room you have that way.

I have the redcliff, which I believe is the “8 man”. It’s good for 3 people and gear. It’s tight with 3 people and a stove. It’s perfect for 2 people and a stove.

My group of 3 use the 8 man. Two of us are on army cots, the other on Helinox cot. We use the liners too so that cuts into the space.

If you want to use cots I don’t think 3 would fit in the 6 man. Especially if you use liners.

Have used a 6 man for 7 years now. Two guys, both 6'5" and stove is perfect. An extra is emergency only. Go 8 man for 3 and stove.

Send updates on 3p + gear in the 8 man when you have tested it out, I'm curious on how it would do for 3 and the occasional 4th. Thanks!
