Might be leaving an Elk State to live in Sacramento for a couple years. Punishment from my agency for getting promoted.

Wife went to school in Davis (yes she is a hippie).

I hear Winters is a reasonablly decent place to live.

Any other not-so Thug Life places around Sacramento?

Elk Grove seems reasonable. What ever you do stay the heck out of south Sac. If you have to commute, I would say get as close to work as you can. Spending two hours a day in traffic will ruin your well being as a person. Ask me how I know 😂.

Davis - expensive, definitely not your people.
Sac proper - south Sac is a no, north like Fair Oaks, Orangevale, etc can be very nice. Downtown depending on where, nice areas are spendy.
West Sac - nicer small town, not a ton of stuff to do, we need some decent shopping and restaurants. Been here since 08 and have no major complaints.
Folsom - some older areas, some newer and very expensive.
Woodland - some older, some newer, some trash. I'd pass but mostly cuz the ex lives there 😆
Winters - similar to Woodland, not a ton there.
Elk Grove - some older but tons of new growth. Stay away from the northeast borders that connect to south Sac.
Further up the hill to Cameron Park, El Dorado hills, very nice, foothills area, but commute to downtown is brutal.

Commute sucks everywhere now, especially through the downtown, causeway, anywhere along the 50 or 99. A bunch of road construction currently which has worsened the commutes.

All depends on on how far you are willing to commute, look at the areas out highway 16, California is expensive, if I ever had to go back to that area that’s the direction I would go

Good luck. I quit several jobs when I was a young man so I could hunt. You get older and have more responsibility than a truck payment, well it gets a lot tougher to do that. IF it will allow you to retire before you're 55 like I did, go for it.

Most of us have to make a move for the fam before we can make a move for ourselves.

California is a big place, and the further east you go the wilder it gets. My suggestion: spend time getting the fam settled in their happy place, then start looking around for your own happy place(s).

Was this a mandatory promotion? My agency will allow us to electively be passed over. They could offer me the Director position and I wouldn't spell California for them let a lone think of moving my family there.

I highly suggest having your kids take up Jiu Jitsu and practice situational awareness.

If you have to live in Ca., Sac. isn't a bad place. Your pretty central to everything. The Sierras and Tahoe are close by, lots of lakes and there's fishing right in downtown. Waterfowl hunting is close. B zone deer and bear hunting aren't that far away either. I like Auburn but you'll have a little commute to Sac. and its expensive (housing is everywhere). Housing's a little cheaper going north on I-5 - Woodland and north. To the West there's Dixon but the commute on 80 can be brutal. Just don't let the B.S. drag you down.

Since Ca banned the sale of new gas vehicles, it may be a good time to get into the scrap metal business. Gonna be lots of junk cars around for sale or pickup in a few years. Also, since the power grid will be shut down, may be less traffic. Biking to work may also be an option.

Sacramento is honestly a shit hole. Most surrounding towns as well but there are a couple less known towns that can offer something. Depending where you’re at traffic is terrible and the drivers are even worse. Problem is your still paying CA property tax, income tax, sales tax, home/rent prices, cost of living, the list goes on.

If they didn’t double your salary you’re in for a rude awakening. Just about everyone i know up there has their wives working for double income, just to live paycheck to paycheck. Sad to see.

PM me for some more info on areas that aren’t as terrible as others.

We will see what happens.

Not our first choice for sure.

We have the up side that my daughter's husband is getting stationed in San Diego (yes I realize this is at best 8 hours away with traffic).
