Why would I buy half of a spotter?

Because you have to buy both either way and can usually get a better deal this way, unless you like to just pay retail prices for both boxes as that is how it’ll ship even if you think your buying a complete unit.

I shopped around, and got my ATX with 65 objective for $2600 total...

If you pay more the $2100 for the eyepiece you aren’t trying or just have money to burn. If you wait a demo or used one will set you back around $1800.
