Hey all. Kicking around the idea of a new spotting scope. Majority of the use, but not necessarily limited to, would be sighting in for deer season. Maximum range would maybe be 200 yards and probably go splatter targets for that. Anyhoo, couple that I have bee reading up on that seem to be descent and a lot of folks like would be the Vortex Viper HD 15-45x45 and the Vanguard Endeavor HD 15-45x65. Not sure about angled or straight. Everyone has their preferences. Probably look for a used one to save a little coin. These two seem to be able to get me where I want to be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also a big Leupold fan for scopes but these two seemed to be raved about a little more. Thanks so much for your time.

I have the Vanguard and have looked through the Viper. I think it’s an easy choice. Go with the Vanguard.

Check out the Cabela's krotos. It compares very well to my vortex razor.

I really like my 65mm Viper. Clear glass, good light-gathering, and plenty of quality in the scope for me to see up to 4-5 miles which is the max that I need.

Buffalojim - If you decide to go with the Vanguard, I have one I was going to throw in the classifieds this week. If you are interested I will give you dibs. Just PM me and I will provide details.

I would highly recommend not going below the Viper class of spotters. There's a significant drop-off in quality I think. It's very common to have to keep upgrading because of the pull to the better stuff. Many people say to just make one painful purchase at the $1000 plus level. If you can't do that, I would advise you to get something that will be plenty useable for all-around glassing. The crappy spotters have poor resell value also. I have $200 that is a sunk cost because of it.

I enjoy my vanguard endeavor 82A. You save some coin on the name, and spec for spec it's up there in quality. Check out some birder sites for info on spotters, they are glassing junkies.
