Mid layer for sheep/goat in Alaska

We won't allow OV to post about thier product here without being a sponsor.

If your in an partnership developing and tweaking products for that said company and talk about the product or company your acting as ambassador. If done purposely obviously it's not OK as that exposure is a perk of sponsorship.

If a person buys a great product and shares with the community without no attachment to the company that is completely different situation.

I'm not saying long time members willfully side stepped the rules, I'm saying they should take a step back and see the entire situation when they have brand collaboration.

Good clarification, I appreciate the response. And agree with that take. Thanks!

The "naked" Alpha/Evolve/similar stuff is probably the ultimate in moving hard, active insulation. It does have a few drawbacks for hunters— it offers zero wind protection; not a surprise when you see one in person. It's also pretty snaggy—if your 100% above treeline, it's not an issue, if you have to hike through brush to get above treeline, it definitely could be.

I've got two "naked" pieces, I've relegated them to backpacking on trails.

For hunting, I prefer a light face fabric over the Alpha/Evolve- it gives a little relief from wind and some protection when busting brush, but you still get a piece that insulates decently, move moisture and dries quickly.

I wouldn't have offered this up a couple of months ago, but if the temps are on the mild side—I'd consider an Alpha/Evolve vest as a possible option.

Just to clear a few things up here....

First, I just posted a thread about some of the new developments we have coming out this summer, including a the active insulation piece mentioned in this particular thread.

Second, when we are developing a new piece of gear, I am very selective about who I send prototypes for testing. And when I do sent something to a person for testing, it is for no other reason than to get their feedback on that particular prototype. If the person I sent gear for testing never provided any feedback at all, there is no recourse or action taken of any kind. They're not asked to ship it back, pay for it, etc.

Furthermore, when I send a prototype for testing, it is just a prototype, and it may not actually make it to the market.

When I make contact with someone for testing and feedback, I do not ask them if they are or are not a member of a forum, group, or other entity. Nor do I ask what their username is or affiliation is with Rokslide. Nor do I ask them to mention, share, or promote in any way the prototype that they are going to test.

So it seems like quite a stretch to say that a person that tested a prototype is in fact "developing and tweaking products" for OV or that OV "gave away a product to talk about on a forum."

Neither of those statements are true or even close to true. We did not ask anyone testing our prototypes to mention it, share it, promote it, or say anything about it on any forum or platform.

However, I do respect that a moderator should err on the side of watching out for Rokslide and doing what's best for their interests. In that spirit, I apologize for any confusion or misplaced blame to those that have spoken about our prototypes, and any disrespect or mishandling shown on our part. Lesson learned.

As others have mentioned; I think the new gold standard for a mid-layer are these active insulations, I think the old grid fleece is pretty well getting killed off.

That being said I've had good luck with all of my Sitka Ambient pieces (UL60, 100 Hoody, 100 Hooded jacket and 100 Vest), but I'm super curious about these new options coming to market like the OV and the GoHunt (approach?) hoody.

LOL. As long as I am alive grid fleece will not be completely killed off. Some stuff just flat works, durable, soft ,breathes and cheap . What else does a guy need ?

I’m not saying it’s any less effective than it once was; I'm just saying there’s bigger and badder kids on the block these days.

I don’t think anyone who’s used both would honestly be able to say that the grid fleece is better from solely a performance standpoint, where budget isn’t a factor.

Hey guys,
There’s already been some great tips on this thread.

I firmly believe that Alpha Direct is the most innovative textile in a long time in the outdoor industry.

The Dynafit Free Alpha and the Ambient are great mid/outer layer pieces.

I have also been wearing the Outdoor Vitals piece that is a hybrid of what you would get if you combined the Ambient with a Patagonia R1 grid fleece. I really like how it fits and how versatile it is.

The naked Alpha pieces are fantastic as well. I have one from Farpointe in 60 gsm weight, which you can get directly from them or on Garage Grown Gear. They are re stocked regularly. Just sign up for notifications. I love to sleep in this, or wear while hiking if I want to stay warm, while allowing a nice breeze through it. A wind shirt over the top basically creates what the Ambient is, but a more versatile 2 piece system.
Thanks for the insights. How was the OR deviator face/shoulder/sleeve fabric for noise? Much swishing or noise when scraped against brush?
