I can’t seem to find any up close pics of the Altitude stocks foreend? Is it more square or rounded?

Great thank you. Trying to decide between this and the AG Privateer.

I’ve never heard of the ag privateer. He just sent me a photo (attached) of the altitude below a manners. I held a few he had in stock and he pointed me towards the altitude for my wants/needs. My rifle will be my first semi-custom.

I just checked out the ag website. It would appear the Visigoth would be the comparable stock to the altitude. The comb height is very different between the two

The privateer manages recoil better but you may have to build up a cheek piece of you run a large scope mounted on a rail.

Could you explain the recoil comment more? Recoil is a concern with what I have planned.

The top of the pad on the Altitude is well below the bore. That adds to muzzle rise. The top of the pad on the Privateer is much higher. I have handled both but only shot the Altitude.

@03mossy, I like the forearm on the Altitude much better than the forearm on the Privateer. The rounded contour on the Altitude feels great carrying in my hand. The forearm on the Privateer felt odd to me. The sides are straighter and don’t contour in.

Is the altitude textured? On the palm swell and forearm? With the adjustable comb the anchor point is still too low?

I’m going to have to just order one at this point.

Thanks in advance

I will echo what @BAKPAKR said regarding recoil management. I have an Altitude stock and compared to others I own (AG Alpine Hunter, Alterra AP, standard Tikka stock, Christensen Monte Carlo) it is by far the most difficult to manage recoil and spot impacts with. I'd recommend the Privateer or, if you want a vertical grip, look at the Alpine Hunter.

Been answered above but the stock design doesn't help with recoil management at all, it may be one of the least effective stocks on the market.

I am also interested in how much the drop at the heel effects muzzle rise on the Mesa vs other stocks with a straight comb (AG Alpine Hunter or Privateer). The comments below are from the smith that put together my rifle and will likely build another for me in the future. He offers the Mesa and Alpine Hunter.

"There is a minimal difference in recoil signature between the two, but the AG alpine hunter does have a SLIGHT less muzzle rise characteristic. The Mesa is about 3 oz lighter, and the AG has a "taller" inlet. Meaning the action/barrel sits taller in the stock and there is more of a gap between the bottom of the barrel and the barrel channel. I've tried to get AG to correct this but they won't. Still a great stock but the asthetics of the AG aren't as nice as the Mesa for this reason."

I wish I could drop my barreled action into each stock to get a real side-by-side comparison.

With all due respect to your gunsmith, but the difference is way more than slight. Having the Mesa Altitude and AG Alpine Hunter and having spent a few thousand rounds behind them in varying shooting positions side by side, there is nothing that the Mesa does better than the Alpine Hunter. My rifles in these stocks are both chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and have the same scope and rings. The rifle in the Mesa has a 24 inch barrel whereas the AH rifle has a 20 inch barrel and is an overall lighter setup. Both are shot exclusively with a TBAC Ultra 7 and both shoot the same ammo. Recoil management and spotting impacts is dramatically easier with the AH rifle despite its lighter overall weight. Everyone who has shot them side by side has also preferred the AH. Long story short after significant time behind it I will likely be unloading the Mesa Altitude stock in the not-too-distant future.

Edited to add: Also, give me functionality over perceived minor aesthetics any day.
