Hey guys, newbie on this site. I’m a very experienced turkey hunter from Middle TN, me and a buddy are looking to make a trip out west this season to chase some merriam turkeys. We have been to Kansas and killed some Rios a couple years ago but that’s as far west as we’ve been. I’m not looking for anyone’s honey hole and I understand not wanting to advertise good public lands on a public talk forum, I’ve seen that ruin a good place or two around here so feel free to pm me. I’ve been doing a lot of research and it’s pretty overwhelming with the amount of public lands in a few different states and I know not all areas have turkeys. We were originally thinking pine ridge area in Nebraska or black hills in South Dakota or Wyoming but I’m getting mixed reviews on those areas. Any help is greatly appreciated, I will gladly exchange info with anyone coming to TN, AL or Ms for an eastern. Thanks guys.

There are other good resources on the website for Nebraska (where to hunt merriams). Obviously Nebraska doesn't have as much public land as you will find in the hills, but no shortage of turkeys to hunt throughout the state.

Might sound funny but California is full of Turkeys . You can shoot 3 Toms in the spring with just a license and a upland game tag.

You just might end up harassed for having a gun or the audacity to hunt

Its actually not bad hunting here. As long as you stay away from LA or SF people are actually normal. I hunt mostly all public and never been harassed

I live in the Los Padres National Forest and most, if not all turkeys were wiped out in the "Day Fire." It's a couple to several hours to hunt turkeys from where I live. Also, most of the good turkey hunting is not on public land.

Did the fire affect the Mendocino NF as well?

Not asking for a honey hole, eh? Sure sounds like you are. Do the research yourself.

FWIW most of us western turkey hunters want to take a trip to TN, GA, AL, etc. to hunt turkeys. But you do you.

I’m not but with millions of acres of public land I’d like to know I was heading to an area of a state with a turkey population. Believe me I am doing plenty of research.

I don’t mind to point someone in the right direction if they were coming to TN, MS, or AL to hunt.
