Minus33 midweight or lightweight. I previously user underarmor 2.5. For my cold weather activities. Late season hunting and sledding. If it was extra cold i just put my cabelas thermals on over it. My sledding gear is uninsulated hard shell and hunting would be soft shell

I just bought a full base layer this past week. I went with the Smartwool boxers and the boot cut leggings in midweight. Then I just scored a Core4 LS T in light weight. I wanted a lighter T so I could wear my Sitka CORE Zip-T over it when it's cooler out or alone on bowhunts.
I tested the boxers yesterday. I've used the UA ones for years and after a days use they smell. I put these on Friday night when I left the house to sleep in the truck at the trailhead 80 some miles away. Hiked five miles then wore them back home. I did the stiff test and the only smell was from the elk urine I'd found in the snow and used as a masking scent. The fit is excellent. I probably could have gone with a large like I buy with most of my stuff. But the sizing chart said go XL.

I've used Smartwool, KUIU, and First Lite. I prefer KUIU or First Lite as they seem to be of a higher quality than Smartwool, and I like to throw my dollars to hunting companies when I can. Smartwool has held together ok, but it gets fuzzy. Fuzzy does not matter except that the fuzz is like Velcro and all the dirt and grass just sticks to it. So far my KUIU and FL has not fuzzed out on me.

I think when it comes to merino wool underware always size down. I have a few different and have sized down and have had good fit in them

I'd personally do light weight bottoms and both light and mid weight tops. Layer the two instead of the polar weight. Just get both and you'll have all your bases covered.

I have the minus 33 lightweights, I worn them through archery season and first rifle season, I only had cabelas microtex light pants on and was fine for all except when sitting still for long periods in the snow and when temps were in the teens, But I think that had more to do with my thin outer layer than the long under wear.
