Mechanicals for elk

Hey guys,

I'm new to this archery thing and really just gearing up for a spring/summer of practice and then hard at it for elk. I've read every page here on Rokslide Archery and a few other archery forums, my head is spinning from info overload...

Anyways, perhaps it's already been discussed here and I just missed it, but... Are any of you using mechanical broad heads for elk? What brands would you recommend? I have a few 2" Grim Reapers to start with, for deer, because the local shop recommended them highly and had all kinds of crazy customer success photos. I'm wondering if I should get something else for elk? Would a fixed be a better choice for larger critters such as elk and moose?

Please forgive my rookie archery questions. Thanks for any and all input!

I'm not using mechs on my elk hunt and I have KE pushing 100#. I know some have had good success with them. A friend used Spitfires last year and killed a great bull and had a tremendous blood trail. He has high KE as well. I think you are better off with a good fixed blade like a Exodus, ST, VPA, Phathead, Magnus, etc. if I had to use a mech, it would be either a Spitfire, Rocket Steelhead or maybe an Ulmer.

Wrongside, go to the elk tab and look on the second page for " mechanicals or fixed for elk". It was a good thread on everyone's input on what they thought was good for archery elk broadhead. Hope that helps!

I have taken quite a few elk with 1-3/8" cut Grim Reaper Razortips. I pull 60lbs with a 29" draw, and generally shoot a 400gr arrow.

I wouldn't recommend a mechanical for elk. If you do use them however, stay away from the 2" cut models. That is a lot of blade to push through a big animal.

Thanks for your input, jmez. That was kinda my gut instinct as well. I'll be doing lots of reading and picking something else for elk.

In the past 40 years of killing Elk, nothing has produced more blood and faster kills than a Spitfire for me; noticeably so. That said, no they aren't as strong a fixed blade but that's never been an issue. All the fixed heads I've killed with, did just that, killed. Nothing special, they just did what they're supposed to do.
At this point for me, it's either Spitfire or Thunderhead 125's.
