Mechanical Broadhead for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose

28.5” draw
66#
485 grain arrow
Sevr Ti 1.5 Hybrids 125
First doe shot with them, 23 yards, went 26 yards.
To say I’m impressed is a understatement.

slightly quartered to but 30ft above him so a pretty steep angle down. Through nearside shoulder blade and got 6 or 7 inches of penetration. Destroyed nearside lung, ripped mediastinum slightly, didn't get into offside lung. Backed out for 6 hours found him 85yds from impact in his first bed, but I know he looped a little, so probably 100-110yds travel total. Another two inches of penetration and he would have likely been dead in a minute or two but that's on me for taking a steep downhill + slight quartering shot.

Grim reaper 1 3/8’s” pro series would be my forever broadhead if I had to pick one for the rest of my life. I’ve killed deer, elk, and bear with them. They’ll be on my arrows moose hunting next fall.

I’ve killed over 100 critters with bow and arrow with all types and brands of heads. I just keep coming back to reapers. In the last few years I’ve killed over 30 critters with them. They flat out work. The slogan “watch them drop” has rung true in the majority of my reaper kills (about 60).

I killed a bull in September with the mini mag (4 blade 1.25”). Hunting partner killed a bull with the 1 3/8 pro series. Complete pass throughs, short and substantial blood trails.

The bow I hunt out west with is 29” draw, 82#, pushing a 520 grain arrow around 290.

The bow I hunt whitetails with is a 70#er pushing a 480 grain arrow around 285.

Is there enough difference that you've seen between the 1 3/8, mini mag, or carni four to worry about? Also looking at the fatal steel 1.5 too

The carnifour is a little more broadhead than I feel comfortable putting through big game. Would probably be fine, but I’d rather air on the side of caution.

The fatal steels are awesome. Killed a dozen or so deer with them. They’re just more expensive to no realized benefit in my experience. 3 fatal steels are the same price a 4 pro series.

I’ve only killed one with the mini mag so I don’t have a strong opinion on them yet.

26 inch draw, 70lb switchback xt, 400ish grain arrows. Reaper pro series 1 3/8. It’s the goat for me as well.

Even with short draw length, older slower bows, and what most consider light arrows it just blows through critters again and again and again….

I still keep a few fixed blades in the quiver but not sure why, reapers flat out work for me.

Can you post a pic of the arrow? I've never even heard of 5 fletch before. What's your thoughts on using 5?
Sure thing, I can also do a separate post as well if you would like to start a discussion about so this one can not get derailed as there is a lot of good info in this post.

Full disclosure, I’m not an engineer so take what I’m about to say as you will

AAE makes a piece called the bitz knob that allows a user to do 4,5,or 6 fletch. The tolerance is phenomenal and I would encourage anyone even someone who does 3 fletch to use it. It takes any play out of the bitz.

5 fletch with smaller vanes, such as the hybrid 23 has almost identical surface area as 3fletch of hybrid 26 or max stealth. The rough math is as follows

Hybrid 23: 2.3 X .38 /2 =0.437 X 5 =2.185
Hybrid 26: 2.8 X .50 /2 =0.7 X 3 = 2.1

By using 5 smaller vanes, I get less wind drift….i was about 4-6 inches less at 60 yards in roughly a 15mph wind and same surface area as 3 fletch for control of fixed and expandable heads. Some would say the increase in leading edges, the front of the vane that hits the wind, will add more drag and control…. When I tested I found I had the same if not better control and no difference in drag out to 80 yds

I know with the recent vane study some people I have talked to have used that as a hard and set rule, and say that it showed the best combination. I took it as there are lots of options to use depending on your situation, species and where you hunt.Overall I think people should at least try it and determine for themselves if it suits them and their situations best.IMG_5099.jpegIMG_5100.jpeg

Unfortunately I can't find my photos or videos right now. But I've been shooting the MegaMeats the last few years. I've made some good shots and I've made some not so good shots and recovered every deer I've shot with them. They open up a huge hole. Shot a doe last year, double lung and she didn't last more than 10 seconds. Unfortunately gut shot a doe the next day. Found her the next morning less than 80 yards from the shot piled up.

~10% FOC if I remember correctly (added some adjustable weight inserts up front).

are you typically seeing pass throughs with that setup

I've killed at least 3 deer with this setup and gotten full pass throughs. I haven't hit the shoulder though so not sure hot it would do in that scenario.

Also just caught my mistake - my total arrow weight last year was closer to 560 grains so pretty heavy for whitetail. I've switched setups completely this year but still shooting MegaMeats. Haven't had success yet but we will find out soon.
