I have had a couple partners focused on the number of steps they took. However when you add a horse to that the counter will register all of the horses steps so the numbers are far beyond your imagination.

I use my GPS, and keep stats since I am a nerd. I found most estimates without a solid measuring device were grossly over exaggerated. I also found the step counter I tried to be way off, GPS has reasonable accuracy.

I only track distance using my GPS unit. I tried using OnX but found that it was inconsistent. It seemed like when I turned the screen off and put it in my pocket the tracking stopped. It eats battery quite a bit too so the GPS unit works far better. The InReach Mini2 is supposed to do a good job as well. To my knowledge the GPS unit (and OnX) will give you "true" distance (i.e. including elevation gain/loss). When I look at my tracks it tells me what the elevation gain/loss was so I assume it rolls that into the total distance of the track.
To this day my ONX leaves me maybe 10 -20 ft difference no more than that. Maybe I'm the chosen one. Its very precise. What phone do you have that it eats battery so fast. I have in on my samsung 9 and on my kids iphone....brightness setting to lowest but readable. All apps stopped. Phone in airplane mode. No volume/vibration. And mine never stopped working when I switch off the scrn. No I don't work for them. I have way better job. Also the tracking feature is very consistent, only 5-10 ft difference. Not sure what your phone settings are. Mine will run almost all day unless I'm taking out of my pocket every 10 seconds to see if its still working. I still keep a battery pack/charger which is always full and has capacity to charge multiple phones and charge itself by solar as well. It would be foolish to go in woods without a backup charger...no matter how good one's tracking skills are or the bio compass in head. Especially when you have a young kid in tow. My ONX has never decieved me and we are always in thick woods away from roads in our coastal, wet rugged NW Oregon. Offline maps downloaded quadrant wise and GO. I trust it completely. I have used base camp and far & wide, not for wet rainy coastal OR.
One should always have an estimate of how far they hike ...helps to set a perimeter direction wise and a plan to go another direction next day or whenever one goes, to have an idea how much territory one will be covering to find the quarry.

Always use the onX tracker. It seems to be at least close enough for what I need

Sounds like your phone is putting OnX to sleep when the screen is off. Mine did that out of the blue and made it look like I teleported all over the place. Should be able to fix it in power settings.
