Max Velocity for Match Bullets?

Most talk is around long range performance where velocities are in the low 2kfps range with these bullets. What sort of experiences do you all have with them in the 3kfps range?

I have an 18" 6creed barrel on its way to me finally and my favorite bullets are typically partitions.

100gr partitions have pretty horrible BC and I'd like to stick with one bullet in this rifle. I've ordered 108 Elite Hunters and 108 ELDMs to test in this barrel. This is slated to be my deer gun this year and down here I can just as likely get a shot at 30yds as I can 300+yds. I know the partitions would work great for my ranges but I'd like to also do some long range work with this rifle.

I have a bit of confidence in the Berger since I took a few deer at close range last year with the 168 classic hunter. The performance was impressive for sure and load dev was pretty sinple. I have no experience on game with the ELDM. Interested in hearing about any bullets you use that are in this category.

I thought it'd be fun to talk about the flip side of the coin when you have something pop out right in front of you and how much more destructive they are and if you've found any downsides.

I know they're not going to bounce off but I certainly prefer an exit. Seems hard to believe but in these thick woods, you can work really hard to track a deer even 25yds without a solid blood trail.
 
My 18" 6 creedmoor shoots factory hornady 108 ammo at 2790, box says 2960 for 24" barrel. So you'll probably be sub 3k mv even with handloads. I shot a bull elk at 40 yards last year with a 30 cal 208 eldm at 2930 mv. No exit but no tracking required.

I'm expecting around 2850 from my research but didn't want to make this 6mm centric.
 
IMO, as long as they’re not moving so fast they come apart in flight, you’re good to go on game. I would rather err on that end of the spectrum rather than artificially narrowing a wound channel for a given cartridge by going to a harder/inferior bullet.
 
Small sample size but I’ve seen two decent bodied mule deer bucks shot sub 100. Bullet was a 168 Berger vld shot from a 7 rem mag. Probably 2800+ impact velocity. Both lung shots and both had baseball sized exits and there was nothing but lung soup inside.

That's been my experience with the Bergers as well but the same, only a small sample size so that males me feel even better. I'll start there and see how it goes. If it shoots the 108 eldms well I might try one on a doe.
 
You'll definitely want to minimize the big bone potential up close. Take a wide open lung or if you have the perfect low neck shot...that's a good one too. My pard hit a bull in the humerus with a 210 and it just broke the leg. No chest trauma beyond extreme bruising. The bull was killed a couple days later and that's when the results were found.
 
There is no max velocity, but there is max rpm where the bullet will physically come apart in flight to due centrifugal forces. Usually it's 305-320k rpms.
 
Maximum velocity for lead core projectiles is 300,000 rpm.
Projectile maximum velocity calculation formula:
Muzzle velocity x 720 divided by barrel twist rate.
Example: 3,000 fps x 720 = 2,160,000 / 8 twist = 270,000 rpm
You can also use this to find maximum velocity:
300,000 rpm x 8 twist / 720 = maximum velocity

It's pretty square info. A eldm in 308 will vanish around 315 from my experience. If you section some various bullets and measure the jacket thickness you have to believe that any other will be similar since the material properties are similar if not exactly the same.

If you have a particular bullet in mind, call the ballistician at that company and ask. They're typically interested in sharing all kinds of information.
 
If you want an exit I’d look at the hornady 105gr bthp. I’ve killed a bunch of stuff with it and I’ve always gotten exits on deer.
